I grew up attending a Reform congregation in Forest Hills where we had musical instruments every shabbat and students of the hebrew school (like me!) could be members of the choir - we sang during many services. It was lots of fun!

You said earlier that music was one of the things lost when the temple was destructed. I understand that it was stopped during the mourning period, but since then, it is a self-imposed loss. Why create more loss?

Jennifer Herzog

To me, it is kind of like, “You took the temple from us, but you can't take our prayers and songs”
Jennifer Herzog
01:35:10
We only ever had someone playing a piano or an acoustic guitar at my shul growing up. But I remember it brought the prayers to life in a very moving way.

In that case, is there any special halachic concern around asking a professional to volunteer their professional services on Shabbat?

This has been very interesting, and I'm glad to see consideration of more music. Thank you.
