Welcome, Paul
Paul Pitre
34:29
Thanks. I tuned in to the afternoon meeting and was waiting to be let in.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
36:51
Good morning Tami, Andrew and everyone!

To all the teachers: Wait time, think pair share, everyone writes, popcorn, around the world, cold call with warning, etc...
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
47:20
Kevin - I'll be honest, I am not sure what all those are. I look forward to hearing more!
Kevin Wang
47:52
student engagement techniques, for previous topic
Holly Koon
49:57
Being able to use chat is super helpful!! I think it is a way to use our time effectively and involve more voices. THe chat transcript can then be part of the public record.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
50:12
Yes - realize that, just am not familiar with those techniques. Look forward to learning more
Jan Marie Brown
52:33
I can see from our meetings that staff work hard to compile information succinctly for board response. Good reminder to allow staff time for full communication.
Kevin Wang
54:33
do we need a slack to keep each other informed on things like what patty is talking about?
Paul Pitre
54:54
Comment
Mary Fertakis
55:39
Kevin - I would want clarification of Slack communications and public records
Kevin Wang
58:11
@Mary, if it works legally, could be a good peer to peer communications tool for members without adding more work for board staff
Kevin Wang
58:22
+1 to Paul's comment
Mary Fertakis
59:12
@ Kevin - yes, Slack can be a great tool
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
59:54
Kevin - can you share so we can all understand?
Patty Wood
01:00:37
I also believe we may be talking about two kids of outreach. "Official' outreach on behalf of the board and "Relational" outreach of individuals simply staying connected and hearing from stakeholders
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
01:01:10
agree Paul
Paul Pitre
01:01:42
Thanks MJ
Mary Fertakis
01:02:30
Agree, Patty
Paul Pitre
01:02:38
One more comment
Jeff Estes
01:04:08
Patty's comment on people knowing commitments for committee work is another example of "onboarding."
Ryan Brault
01:05:55
Great idea Kevin!
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
01:06:13
I don't think students are any different, honestly
Paul Pitre
01:06:36
I agree with that, Patty.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
01:07:25
Margarita has joined us, by the way
Patty Wood
01:07:41
I thought we did student mentoring already. I know I took Margarita 'under my wing' a bit more. The hard part was there needs to be a geographical relationship since we sometimes help drive.
Ryan Brault
01:07:50
Hi Margarita!
Randy Spaulding, State Board of Education
01:08:16
Yes, students are supposed to have an official mentor
Jan Marie Brown
01:08:53
In a virtual environment an onboarding buddy would be especially helpful. When meeting face to face one can glean support.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
01:09:01
Now - the geographical location isn't as much of a factor
Kevin Wang
01:12:41
+1 to MJ comment, the super helpful informal conversations is hard to come by online (hence slack or something similar can help)
Jan Marie Brown
01:15:46
Again, appreciate the staff and board relationship we have. Thanks to leadership on both sides.
Ryan Brault
01:22:25
Need to add a “laugh track” when you put up the humorous slides next time. Humor while everyone is on mute just isn’t quite the same. ;-)
Parker Teed
01:26:49
It's recording
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
01:32:56
We didn't even get to that because we were reviewing the current list
Jan Marie Brown
01:33:16
I've nothing to add to the list at this time.
Kevin Wang
01:36:08

02:09:18
I agree Patty
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:09:28
I think it keeps us connected more locally
Holly Koon
02:10:33
I makes me a better board member. It is how I know wht is happening around the state and how it is different from my little corner of the world. HOw else will we know the hugely diverse set of conditions around the state.
Mary Fertakis
02:11:12
@Holly - agree
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:11:27
So are our conversations not valid?
Kevin Wang
02:11:43
+1 on Harium comment
Paul Pitre
02:11:46
I agree, Holly. I perceive this to be part of the role.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:12:05
Agree
Kevin Wang
02:13:42
+1 Jeff

02:14:58
A variety of stakeholders, a time limit with prompts on presentation and provide board member reflection with the expectation of a time limit on the whole process.
Paul Pitre
02:15:54
Thanks for brining Dr. Darling-Hammond. Excellent presentation!!!
Holly Koon
02:16:15
Agree Paul! Excellent! Lots to think about.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:16:30
Yes Paul!
Kevin Wang
02:17:33
Patty from our group had good points on student voice

02:24:17
there is a document that students pass from one to another on acronyms
Mary Fertakis
02:25:09
@Holly - thanks for your comments. Unfortunate that boards think such a small % of the agenda is relevant to students. I wonder if they've asked them? We've had student reps for 15+ years in my district and they have been interested in basically everything because it helps them understand context of other things going on.
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:25:12
Paul - you mentioned a higher ed student group that maybe our student voice committee, students that can engage with and possibly learn from
Kevin Wang
02:26:10
acronyms list could be great for new members as well as a part of the onboarding process
Kevin Wang
02:26:19
or with onboarding buddy
Mary Fertakis
02:27:07
+1 to Kevin
Holly Koon
02:27:52
Mary, exactly!! We are talking about some really big things that are super germane to the student experience, anti-racism, MBL, Graduation Pathways. Maybe start with those topics and help our students get more in-depth experience and knowledge to be fully contributing board members in our discussions. For example the panel that M. set up was amazing. That seemed liked a super valuable use of student board member time!
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:40:34
Affiliations may be a helpful addition
Jan Marie Brown
02:40:37
Liaison role expectations need clarification.
Kevin Wang
02:41:12
+1 Jeff
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:42:17
It has been hard for me to make the Workforce Board meetings since they often conflict
Mary Fertakis
02:42:33
+1 Jeff; +1 Jan
MJ Bolt - WA State Board of Education
02:49:40
I would say more than just in the minutes - there needs to be clear communication to the Board that ED is starting
Jan Marie Brown
02:51:35
Allowing preliminary rule making action for the sake of timing of SBE efficiency and effectiveness makes sense to me.
