I am glad that there is prison ministry emphasis and helping people once they get out of prison. However, as important is prevention (i.e. keeping people from going to prison). I would like to see more effort in regard to fairness in sentencing, pre-trial intervention programs, and other related social justice issues such that people are not in lifestyles that put them at risk of going to jail. Perhaps the Diocese of Charleston could be on the forefront of these preventive measures as well.

I believe that Deacon Carl Johnson is involved in theDiocesan Prison Ministry program. Deacon Johnson has been working in prison ministry for a number of years. He should be contacted to assist in your Parish's engagement in this effort.

I would suggest that all of us who are products of a Catholic education but did not attend St. Martin de Porres or St. Anthony can show our appreciation for the gift of a quality education to us by financially investing in these two schools. It is easier to preserve and improve what we have than to start anew. We should give individually as well as from our Parish budgets. Someone we did not know gave so that we might now have. We can help keep these schools available as they continue to evangelize in the Black community.

Father Michael Okere thank you for your concern for our foreign priests. You make such good points. Also thank you Deacon Chambliss for your words.
Arthur McFarland
03:23:54
Deacon Chambliss, thank you and Father Okerre for your presentation and comments. Deacon Chambliss is so right about the need to promote the six Black candidates for sainthood to inspire as well as aid in evangelization in the Black community. Both of you are right on the sensitivity of priests serving in African American parishes. Proper training is critical to keeping our adults and youth in the Church. Young people and adults have left the Church because of the failure to recognize and address the cultural and spiritual needs by our priests. The summer program at Xavier University in New Orleans can aid in educating non-Black or foreign born priest about serving in Black parishes. Parishes should consider financially supporting new priests to attend this program. The Diocese should also support this effort as part of the evangelization program. Foreign born priests have filled a void in Black and non-Black parishes across the Diocese.
