Daniella Graves
37:27
Yes!! That is my biggest struggle—being in dialogue with those who lack rationality.
Matthew Dial (Sandhills CC)
41:26
It makes me think about how the people love to think most people agree with of Civil Rights movement of the 60s at the time. It only when movement is realized and becomes history do we bring these people to the other side.
Nancy Cavillones
44:30
Voter apathy is a big issue, sometimes I think more than suppression.
nell scott
45:37
ACCESS!
Kimberlee (she/her)
45:42
and white liberals tend to think that the package that is more appealing is to go more centrist, not more progressive, which does not ever work

Molly Crippen (1L)

👏
Erica Etelson
47:31
I'm hearing Helen talk about the importance of overcoming the toxic divisions at the same time that the panelists are all warning against "reaching out" to racists. This seems like a contradiction that I'd like the panelists to address a little more.
Sara Summers
47:32
Yes Melina!
Monique Thomas
47:42
Preach Melina!
Rev. Felicia Parazaider (she/they)
47:50
Truth
Fatima Barajas
48:14
Agreed, we settled for biden, but we deserve better
Erica Etelson
48:14
What do the panelists make of the phenomenon of voters who support progressive issues and reactionary candidates (eg. FL voters who voted for min wage increase AND for Trump)?
Daniella Graves
48:20
Yes-It’s a systemic issue.
Dr B
48:28
This country was never designed to have a two-party system, was it?
Tajma
48:50
Stay Salty!!!
Shireen King
49:19
Erica, I would like that as well. Can you put that into the Q&A so they will see it?
Erica Etelson
50:44
Shireen, sure.
Sonya Sukalski she/her
53:37
Most Democrats are beholden to their corporate donors, not the people voting for them. I'm glad there is a progressive caucus - they need to wield their power and have people around the country show up to back them.
Rev. Felicia Parazaider (she/they)
54:10
Stop trying to reach the unreachable
Erica Etelson
54:31
Working America AFL-CIO was able to flip significant #s of white working class Trump voters in swing states by talking about pandemic and health care. My experience working with Working America makes me not want to write them off.
Kimberlee (she/her)
54:37
banish the electoral college
Rev. Felicia Parazaider (she/they)

William Tamayo
57:14
Thank you Melina... Yes... BLM.
Adé T.W. Jackson
57:35
that 55% and over garnered the majority of that 71 million people, that sounds like a virus already spread within American culture... white supremacy.
Erica Etelson
59:05
Amen!
Sandra Bass
59:20
@ericaetelson I tend to agree with you. Less about wooing white voters but putting forward polices and solutions that allow us to forge issue based coalitions. That said, agree with Melina that black women once again saved the day and are schooling folks on what it takes to organize for electoral politics. Dem Party needs to be paying attention.
Adé T.W. Jackson
01:02:43
#VoteAndOrganize + #SupportBlackWomen = some contemporary political wins on the road to Critical justice.
Kimberlee (she/her)
01:03:06
we need to be the iceberg that wrecks the status quo
Reba Rose
01:03:32
Thank you Helen, what is our vision, what are we moving towards, how can we learn from the coalition work that women of color have manifested?
Rev. Felicia Parazaider (she/they)
01:03:34
Absolutely, Kimberlee
Adé T.W. Jackson
01:03:50
that’s a great way to put it @ Kimberlee ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Nancy Cavillones
01:04:17
My epiphany came when someone on Instagram said that not everyone has to go out and protest, that there is a need for all kind of roles into this fight. We jsut need to pick a lane.
Erica Etelson
01:04:24
Reclaim Our Vote (led by Andrea Miller) is continuing its fight against voter suppression in GA now through the Jan special election. Phonebankers are needed! http://centerforcommonground.org/main/index.php/campaigns/reclaim-our-vote

01:11:10
I agree Tim!
Matthew Dial (Sandhills CC)
01:13:44
Who writes the narrative for progressives?
Erica Etelson
01:14:22
Merge Left (by Ian Haney Lopez) has some great research & ideas for multi-racial messaging that undercuts the racist dog whistles Helen is talking about.
Daniella Graves
01:16:08
Spadework
Meghan Fulton
01:17:00
thank you Melina! And I agree with Tim that the new surge following George Floyd helped Biden get in
Erica Etelson
01:17:07
Another successful model I love is the door-to-door "deep canvassing" strategy developed by the LA LGBT Leadership Lab and adopted by People's Action and a handful of other groups -- they're able to get people with deep prejudices to make profound shifts in a 10-min conversation.
Nancy Cavillones
01:18:03
I think the youth are generally more progressive and forward-thinking.
Sonya Sukalski she/her
01:18:51
Youth are also our present - thank goodness - what a blessing!
Nancy Cavillones
01:19:20
and the ethnic/racial make-up is changing too— more mixed families
Moe Miller
01:19:20
YES! Helen!
Daniella Graves
01:19:21
I’m interested in what the panelists think will happen in terms of a backlash to progress in 2024? Such as the whitelash that we had after Obama that led us to Trump.
Gabriela Garcia
01:19:42
I agree Amalia! I feel like the youth of today feel empowered to truly speak up and take action in order to create the change that the U.S needs in order to move in the correct direction
Erica Etelson
01:21:03
What's the antidote to that, Tim?
Cris Fowler
01:21:44
AMEN Tim!
Heidi Tessmer (she, her, hers)
01:21:57

01:22:11
yeah!
Moe Miller
01:22:52
YES!
Shireen King
01:23:15
Keep in mind, it the 60s, it was the youth who were most willing to speak up and do the work. I was in high school and college during that time and that is what we did.
Nancy Cavillones
01:25:18
police in schools is BS
Moe Miller
01:25:26
Black youth speak their Black experience as youth. They don't get a pass because they are young.
Erica Etelson
01:25:30
Youth aren't cynical the way many of us older activists sadly are.
Meghan Fulton
01:26:11
exactly Melina!!!
Gabriela Garcia
01:26:17

Moe Miller
01:38:54
Yes, it does.
Tajma
01:39:55
Yes we spend a lot of time loving, analyzing the problem and not enough on what the solution is and envisioning the world we want to live in.
Felicia Gustin
01:41:37
And Cubans in Florida...
Marsh, Leslie
01:41:40
Socialism and communism are bogeymen here in the US. We don't understand what either are.
Alissa Berry
01:41:53
Tajma, I am hope we can work on the solution over the next four years.
Tajma
01:42:37
RIght on Alissa, that's what's up.
Sarah Noble
01:43:15
Yes, Helen!♥️
Stancia Whitcomb
01:43:17
Speak on it Helen! Keeping us divided and ignorant of each other is the game plan.
Marsh, Leslie
01:43:23
I don't understand groups who vote for representatives who actively demonstrate antipathy toward those very groups.
Alfreda Stroman
01:44:40
Systemic racism is historical, white supremency
Sonya Sukalski she/her
01:46:50
Amen. Not every woman in the suburbs voted for Trump either. Demographics can help but don't tell the whole story.
Moe Miller
01:47:04
In my world, there's an application. Yes, turn in your resume, where are your receipts!
Stancia Whitcomb
01:47:36
Speak on it Helen! Know YOUR personal history.
Reba Rose
01:47:56

Erica Etelson
01:48:39
The book Dying of Whiteness delves into how key it is to show white racists how their racism is hurting themselves in addition to hurting POC
Tajma
01:48:47
Need to have a real conversation about anti-Blackness within non-Black POC communities.

01:49:16
