“If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.”
Nick Elitzik
50:53
that quote… one of the most misunderstood teachings in zen
John Ferrari
51:51
means you are not there. But still a recognition ‘problem” not misuderstood.
Nick Elitzik
52:18
that’s not what it means…
John Ferrari
53:06
well enlighten me
Nick Elitzik
53:08
It’s talking about the experiences of meditation, all forms that appear to the mind… It’s merely a hallucination
Linda Borland
53:11
what we kill is our grasping reification of objectified buddha
Sara Cavic
53:30
Linda, that is how I see it too.
John Ferrari
54:07
except that sounds pretty mental. I would rather be there.
Nick Elitzik
54:22
The whole quote is: “If you see a buddha, kill the buddha. If you see a demon, kill the demon.”
Nick Elitzik
55:02
It means whatever appears to the mind, good or bad… it’s just an empty appearance, nothing to really grasp onto
Barry
55:32
Thanks Nick

55:53

It also means to not be so confident in your interpretations.

I was wondering if Andrew could riff a bit on words and sounds in dreams. I was surprised when I read in the Lucid Dream workbook that it’s difficult to read in dreams, because although the words in my dreams are indeed mostly nonsensical, I regularly read while dreaming. Similarly, in both my liminal and dream states, I regularly hear locutions/passages of music that seem to cut in between images. No question in particular, just hoping Andrew could offer some comments.
Nick Elitzik
58:09
I was doing some translation for a taiwanese zen organization called Dharma Drum Mountain. The founder, Master Sheng Yen, was very learned and realized… one of his missions was to help correct these kinds of misconceptions (which unfortunately are rampant in the west…)
Florian Divi
59:10
Thank you Andy and Andrew for all your effort and love in 2020 <3 You are the best!! Need to leave now, much love, Florian
Nicole

Thanks for asking that question, Eve. I also hear music blaring in my dreams as well and wondered about it.
John Ferrari

Robin Wall Kimmerer reads her own book, Braiding Sweetgrass. So evocative. So communicative. Such a personal experience.

Andrew, thank you for these sessions! I love your humor! Can you riff of the idea of waking dreaming and how others, i.e. people, animals, rocks, double blind experiments, car crashes, etc. co-create the “reality” that we experience as “real?”
