What was the response of other teachers that were not part of it? Did they want to replicate in the rest of the school?

@David, when I was doing alt ed in a conventional school, there was mixed response. Eventually, we secured some funding to deliver self-directed PD to teachers. We did this for 5 years quite successfully but it was teachers from throughout the district that were more interested than the teachers in my building.

The more successful an alternative program becomes in a traditional school, the more likely it is to meet with resistance from educators who do not want to change. The key is a principal/headmaster who provides the kind of leadership that prevents competing programs under the same roof from sabotaging each other. It has become clear to me that a self-directed program and a traditional program can co-exist in ways that are beneficial to both and allows for the growth of the self-directed program.

Well put, Richard! :)

Agreed, Richard. I had very superficial support from admin but the fact that we got funding from the ministry of ed to share our process, admin and our board had to at least pretend to be supportive

I can vouch for Derry’s book. Chapter six I found to be particularly valuable at providing a vision of how teachers and students can practice democracy in a state school.

Another option Can is to research the universities in your area and look up the research interest of the education profs to find allies.

I share your concern Derry, well said. We need to think about inclusion and I would extend that to those with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Hi Sebastian. If people do not know Akilah, she was recently published “Raising Free People”. Until recently she was heavily involved with the Alliance for Self-Directed Education - ASDE.
