Webinar: Recognizing and Combatting Ageism during the Covid-19 Pandemic and Beyond - Shared screen with speaker view
Tanya DeKona
31:47
I hope that your presentation may include some down-to-earth real-life examples of how individuals can behave in ways that combat ageism, like not denying normal aging by saying, "I'm 90 years young," for example.
ROSELINE
32:18
Hi. This is Roseline Thompson
Tovah Kasdin
39:34
Welcome everyone! Please share your questions and comments in the chat.
VHABALWayK
46:22
What is the impact of race on ageism?
Becky Kopp
46:40
yes-good queston
Tovah Kasdin
47:00
We will ask our speakers during Q and A
crobinson
48:00
Positive interactions and having a positive demeanor make a difference
Shutic Coates
48:12
I love the older population!!
Shutic Coates
48:29

crobinson
49:38
Yes , one must enjoy their work.
marvarene.carnegie
49:47
At what age is consider old?
Patricia Dubroof
50:27
Bullying at any age is unexceptable.
crobinson
50:42
Truly, is all about how you feel. My perception.
Sydney Palinkas
52:05
I've talked to many older people who worried that if they got sick, they would be consider "disposable" and not "worth" of the use of resources.
Karen Cobble
52:10
The fact that our new president is older was mockery
Jacqueline Washington
52:13
When I turned 50 I told people I didn't want any cards/balloons/comments about me being "over the hill" or "old".
carol
52:15
deaths in nursing homes and assisted living facilities were under-counted and under-reported
Karen Cobble
53:14
Younger folk were irritated about senior shopping hours.
Kelsey Van Dyke
53:43
This is such an important conversation!!! Wow.
Jacqueline Washington
53:45
COVID patients were sent to nursing homes to be cared for.
Wanda Smith
54:00
People expressing anger that older people were prioritized to get the vaccine.
Kerigan Sullivan (she/her/hers)
54:02
Yes, I remember some disgusting comments from a political representative (cant remember who) who said that older adults should be happy to sacrifice themselves for the economy and the younger generations in lieu of a lockdown!
Mary Ellen Franzen S11583
54:16
Even now, getting older adults vaccinated, entry into the vax appt process is through on-line sign-up. Along with the digital divide for older adults, many do not have the knowledge of on-line processes. It has been very frustrating that agencies serving older adult have not been shouting about this sign-up method.
Karen Cobble
54:21
They devalue us but want to be us to get serviced first with vaccines
carol
55:03
NY sent recovering covid patients to nursing home to free up hospital beds. This policy showed little regard to the others living in those facilities.
Traci Knieriem (IFW)
55:57
Amen Home Health Aids never had Billboards thanking them for working through the entire pandemic with no support, and most of them make $12 an hour while the agencies they work for make $26-$28 and hour. Most do not have insurance because the agencies charge so much for it, and then don't give the aids enough hours to cover the cost of insurance.
Deb Jones
01:00:18
Ageism and gender
Anne Marie (she/they)
01:03:41
This is incredibly trivial, but I'm an (older) runner. When we do races, they give awards based on age groups. In other words, you only compete with folks who are or are near your age. The age groups are often defined as: 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and 60+. This means that those of us who are over 60 are competing with (potentially) 3 decades of runners, while others are competing with only their decade. First of all, lumping all older adults as 60+ is insulting. Second, this is unfair to everyone competing in the category. When I complain to race organizers, the answer is: "there just aren't that many older runners." If the race were more welcoming to older runners, maybe there would be!
Donna Marie Alexander
01:04:29
Will we get a copy of the presetation?
Morgan Lampson
01:04:37
Yes.
Tovah Kasdin
01:04:58
slides will be sent out afterward within a couple of days
VHABALWayK
01:05:08
We do
Karen Cobble
01:06:13
absolutely they are brain washing us into thinking aging is bad we die our gray and get lifted everywhere
Martha
01:06:46
I am 72 and still work a full time and part time job. I question why I have to say still work and why I sometimes am approached with comments that I think it so great you are still working.
Judy Berman
01:09:40
The degradation of women and ageism are linked. While there are many ageist ideas that impact men, many are targeted specifically at women
Anne Marie (she/they)
01:10:57
Also, people make comments about age-related groups that they would never make about racial or religious groups. It's still ok (socially acceptable) to be ageist.
Gloria Teasley
01:12:06
"You look good for your age"
Donna Marie Alexander
01:12:45
Good questions? Good ways to respond!
Deb Jones
01:14:14
The impact of senior adult communities vs mixed aged communities
Mary Ellen Franzen S11583
01:15:25
Well, they may make age-related coments out loud where while they don't make racial or religious baiased comments out loud. WE need to make sure that we don't push ageism "undercover" but root it out similar to the way we should be working on for racism
ERIN SALISBURY
01:16:53
Hmmmm lots of connections between capitalism and ageism.
Patricia Dubroof
01:17:27
