Hello this is Mrs Parkar, What is the tuition for students who are not eligible for help from you?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:00:07
Program is free for all students
Mru Parkar
01:00:12
When would we come to know if the student is selected or not?
Sandy Lee
01:00:12
If it is virtual, are wet labs still possible?
Maitri Jaddu
01:00:15
How many students usually apply every year?
Sachin Tatkar
01:00:20
Hello, is there any restriction in terms of immigration status? Some programs only accept citizens/permanent residents.
David Boone - Hillman Academy

David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:00:56
We expect to announce admissions decisions in early april
Joachim Arul
01:00:57
Are there any location specific eligibility criteria or is the program open to all students in the US?
Mru Parkar
01:01:28
Any special eligibility criteria for 2 years program?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:01:37
@Sandy - we do not anticipate a fully virtual program. We do expect that wet labs will be available at the very least like they were last year…which was ~30 of them.
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:02:25
@Maitri - changes from year to year. Normally we receive 200-600 applications
Lucas
01:03:13
Are essays the primary way you weigh applicants or are there other criteria taken into account?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:03:23
@Sachin - citizenship/permanent status is required for compensation, but it is not required for acceptance/volunteering
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:04:11
@Mrs. Parkar - we are not a true residential program. Most students come to campus each morning and leave in the evening. We provide lunch for everyone.
Sachin Tatkar
01:05:09
Thank you. Is it possible to do the Yes program as a volunteer without compensation?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:05:23
@Joachim there are not any restrictions on location. Note if we aren’t able to have housing this year, then students who cannot commute to campus will only be able to complete a remote/virtual internship like in 2020 and 2021
Maitri Jaddu
01:05:25
Thank you! How many freshmen apply? And, how many are typically accepted? Is there any limit as to how many freshmen are accepted, considering that that they are youngest :-)
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:06:07
@Mrs. Parker - no special criteria for the 2 year program except the students need to be eligible for compensation
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:06:50
@Lucas - we take a wholistic approach to admissions, but essays and recommendation letters are weighed heavily in the decision.
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:07:42
@Lucas - also we have 7 different admissions groups - one for each of the 7 sites. Every application is read by the two you select. We then discuss all applicants
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:08:34
@Sachin - It is not possible to do the YES program as a volunteer. However, we’ve had many volunteers who come back for a second summer…and we will help all students who want to enter science fairs regardless if they are in the YES program.
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:10:10
@Maitri - not many freshman apply because of age…especially because most are only eligible for computational projects. However, we’ve taken a rising sophmore almost every year.
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:11:20
@Maitri - all students are examined regardless of class level…but if we have a difficult time deciding between a younger and older student, the older student sometimes wins out with the expectation that the younger student can reapply the following year, but the older student might not be able to
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:11:39
Great questions everyone! Anything else?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:11:46
Or did I miss any questions?
Sandy Lee
01:13:30
Is gender identity or sexual orientation recognized as underrepresented?
David Boone - Hillman Academy
01:15:16
@Sandy - unfortunately, the NIH does not recognize gender identity or sexual orientation yet. However, I’m hopeful this will change in the not too distant future
Maitri Jaddu
01:16:42
Thank you. Could you please provide additional information about the Computational Bio?
Gayathri
01:17:03
Any recommendation letter is good?
Maitri Jaddu
01:17:57
More information about the two programs?
Maitri Jaddu
01:19:36
Do you expect the students to already know programming to do these programs?
Elizabeth Devlin
01:20:39
How many students are accepted out of the 200-600 applicants?
lkang
01:20:42
Could you please give examples of some of the research format for the wet lab sites? For example in cancer biology, do we create a research question with our mentor on a certain type of cancer? Do we create some sort of medical solution? Thank you!

Would it be better to have 2 science teachers send in recommendations or 1 science and 1 math? Thank you!
