Corporations merge until there is only one pot of money that can be used for governing. The richer people get treated better than the poor. A one leader situation emerges.

Some immigrants have come from countries where it is dangerous to participate in politics, so they hold back here. Also our confusing mix of city, county, state, federal governments complicates the local learning process.

All of these factors have been promoted by talk radio for at least 35 years. And liberals have done almost NOTHING to counteract that. Talk radio has become the "gateway drug" to authoritarianism/fascism.

I remember how confused I was when I first started to really take interest in issues (ie: kids were grown and gone!) There was not only a CD, but an LD and a City Council District, and a County District, etc.! And there was a different map for each. Fire Districts, Conservation District, precinct! I’m sure I left out LOTS!

The audience for talk radio, especially during drive time, is orders of magnitude greater than podcasts, internet blogs, etc.

The endorsement questionnaire used to ask how much money a candidates campaign was trying to raise.. I think we got that removed in King County.

Jeremy, you're comparing something that has been building an audience, becoming trusted, for 35 years. To expect alternative talk to gain traction in three or four years is preposterous. The primary reason, IMO, that Air America failed is because they did not own, control their distribution -- the radio stations were owned by Sinclair, Clear Channel, etc. which were prepared to let Rush, etc. build an audience but were not interested in letting Air America build a similar audience.Buying up radio stations is something the liberals can do because they are not all that expensive, relative to TV, and are available all the time because the radio market is saturated.

If you are running a radio station you need advertisers to pay the expenses. The chief advertisers are corporations. The corporations and their money are in control. Can a cooperative be utilized as a radio venue to teach democracy?

Well, if you sign in for a committee hearing, during the meeting, the secretary is asked how the sign is has gone: how many PRO, how many CON and how many OTHER sign ins are there for the bill being discussed. WA State Legislators do want to hear what constituents think. Actions do matter. As the quote from Elie Wiesel says, neutrality doesn’t benefit anyone but the oppressor.

One problem is that most people are clueless as to what socialism or communism is. Public schools are a socialist concept. The terms are used to evoke irrational fear.

Arnold, right wing talk didn't make money for the better part of a decade. Station owners didn't care. If a number of Hollywood folks and other liberals with $ were to run a strategically located network of radio stations, (one would only need a bit over a dozen) they could do it within a very few years.

Key is getting voters who support democracy to turn out and vote. Key to winning in 2020 was increasing number of people who voted. Have to show that voting matters and they can make a difference.

Pay attention to local issues and communicate with elected officials either in praise or with criticism. When we think they are not being responsive or going down the wrong road, gather a group and object. And keep it up.
