Schools have not progressed. They are not adapting to all the changes in our world.
Lea Jovy
19:26:22
YES! Childcare is a big driver for schools staying open in the UK..
Heather Kostell
19:28:28
Yes, Bowie! Young people can't practice these micro-skills or gain an awareness of their own interests when you're being micromanaged at school all day.
Ivan Beeckmans
19:29:00
School gets in the way of learning.
Ms Islah - KinderKaizen Arau
19:29:45
yesss, they lost the joy of learning! 😓
Bowie Miller
19:29:50
Heather - absolutely. We need free time to dive deeper!
Athirah Dahlan
19:30:10
no intrinsic motivation.
Aimi Puzi
19:30:36
"how to learn for themselves?"
Bowie Miller
19:31:35
Athirah - motivation comes from doing hard things and succeeding, and from focusing at least part-time on topics you actually WANT to learn more about
Allison Wimer
19:32:10
Yes! Because schooled kids have not been given time to explore their own interests, most don't have a clue of what they want to do at 18 or even beyond. This is also speaking from my own personal as a former schooled child. At 30, I still feel a loss as to what I want to do and wish I had been given the time when I was younger to self-direct my education.
Ms Islah - KinderKaizen Arau
19:32:27
want vs need (in education)cc: Miss Aimi 😉
Prajakta Shashank Nigam
19:32:56
Jennifer - Good news is that all of that changes with the internet! So we could still have community based education now, but get access to all content and teachers anywhere int he world
Heather Kostell
19:33:10
I feel ya, Allison. I think a majority of people can relate to your comment.
Allison Wimer
19:33:47
Thanks Heather!

Purpose of education 🌟

conventional schooling probably never worked well as a system. there were some bright spots but few and far between.

Another shift now. What are we educating for?
Ms Islah - KinderKaizen Arau

Allison Wimer
19:35:21
I think there is also a tremendous amount of anxiety and shame for " among millenials and generation Z because the education system has failed them.
Allison Wimer
19:35:31
for failing to be an adult*

I think conventional schooling has worked pretty well for the purpose it was created for, and I think that's maybe the issue.

19:40:34

I work with a 16 year old homeschooler who is quite concerned about getting set up in a career that will sustain her. What is education's connection to career prep?

Alison - I can speak to that. Education is not about getting a job necessarily, but the skills you learn about HOW to learn (Jenn just mentioned them) allow flexibility in career development

19:43:37
So I actually started my career at 15 with those tools. Careers change, what you need to know evolves, but if you have the skills to learn independently, you can evolve with it.
Lea Jovy
19:43:48
You’re very welcome :)
Prajakta KN
19:44:43
And one more thing to set the context for those 6 pillars would be to create a wholesome environment in which this type of education happens

Absolutely agree, Hanna! Dr. Gabor Mate said that the greatest gift we can give our kids is our own happiness.
Alison Snieckus (she/her) - Liberated Learners
19:50:00
Can you say more about how we can integrate the pillars in a non-coercive environment. I agree with Bowie's thoughts: modeling, life learning. Are there other aspects?
Ms Islah - KinderKaizen Arau
19:50:04
The need to feel belong to something that you want to keep doing.
Ms Islah - KinderKaizen Arau

Alison - we’re about to launch our new platform tomorrow. Jenni’s course is part of that - you can see it at www.beyondschool.co
Alison Snieckus (she/her) - Liberated Learners

Do you have space for the young people to focus on free play for example?
Ivan Beeckmans
19:57:35
Worse is knowing a lot of worthless information that doesn’t help them grow.
Heather Kostell
19:58:28
Exactly, Lea. I think about all the things I was taught from grade school up to college, and how many things I don't remember (which is a LOT). If it's not meaningful to the learner, then oftentimes it's forgotten.
Allison Wimer
19:58:41
Can you talk more about special needs or neurodiverse learners at Beyond School?
Prajakta KN
20:00:34
How does the balanced diet idea fit with the free-learner model? I believe Peter Gray’s philosophy is to let go of “our” idea of what is “balanced”

Yes! And then we’re not accidentally blocking the power of a really talented spoken word performer by redlining their mistakes - sometimes if we focus on our strengths, our weaknesses are tackled simultaneously.

Can you speak to the operating cost and diversity of access of your amazing program? I see a monthly membership model on your site.
Allison Wimer
20:10:39
I love that quote. "Work with the kid you have, not the kid you want."
Prajakta KN
20:11:56
Thanks, Jennifer. I agree facilitation is important, environment/context is also important. Your approach aligns a lot with Waldorf pedagogy.
Heather Kostell
20:12:15
Outschool Inc. offers a variety of classes/ activities for kids. that they can select based on interests. How is Beyond School different from an online resource like that?
Brigid
20:13:34
Today kids refer to ‘doing school’ it is so completely separated for them from doing/being themselves…
Gayle Hanlon
20:14:01
What would your building blocks be if you had the opportunity to build the foundation of the understanding of education from scratch?
Stephanie Shuler
20:14:14
Could we support this kind of shift, en masse? Globally?
Heather Kostell
20:18:22
Can parents view a class with their child?
Ayana's Collective
20:19:42
Is there a teacher training process? It sounds as though there is some vetting for teachers…monitoring and support.
Bowie Miller
20:20:48
Ayana - there is teacher training in terms of how to use the platform, but all the teachers have already been strongly vetted in terms of the value they bring and the passion they have for their subject. So we don’t teach them HOW to teach.
Heather Kostell
20:20:59
Thank you so much, Lea for answering my question.
Carl Rust
20:21:11
oftentimes on outschool you have consent of the learner.
Dr Putri Afzan Maria Zulkifli
20:21:12
can I know your total number of students? i find this so interesting
Ayana's Collective
20:21:21
Thanks, Bowie.
Bowie Miller
20:21:42
Parents can view the class recordings or show up to facilitate, but we encourage kids to show up to in-person sessions alone to build that self-direction
Lea Jovy
20:21:46
Heather - if they choose/want to. We don’t ban it like Outschool does.
Lea Jovy
20:22:52
Ayana - Hannah’s correct; we expect teachers to already be experts on their subject matter AND have experience teaching, and online. We also provide teacher coaching and mentoring, if needed. Our support for teachers is second to none - because if they’re happy and performing, so are our kids!
Lea Jovy
20:23:32
Dr. Putri - we have helped over 200+ families since last year; around 300 students (children)
Dr Putri Afzan Maria Zulkifli
20:23:47

20:25:50
Thanks so much, Lea. I’m wondering if you ever observe classes? Meet with teachers? Get student feedback? I ask because reflection I feel reflection is such a vital part of growth. Just wondering what that looks like.
Prajakta KN
20:26:07
True that
Lea Jovy
20:26:25
Yep - we watch the recordings, we meet with the teachers weekly individually and have a monthly team meeting. We ask for feedback after EVERY class/courses…
Bowie Miller
20:26:32
We meet at least once a week, more if we choose to! Student feedback happens every week. And all classes are recorded. :)
Heather Kostell
20:26:33
I was asking about parents being with their kids, maybe for the first class, because my kids are shy and afraid of being with people they don't know. I also think their experience with online learning last year when the pandemic began was very negative. So there's definitely fear and apprehension there.
Lea Jovy
20:27:46
Heather - totally understand that; again, we cater to the individual child so if your child needs that, we can work with that AND we know our teachers are SO encouraging and inspiring, they will get a totally different remote learning experience
Ayana's Collective
20:28:06
That’s great to hear! Thank you so much!
