Absolutely, existing staff are underpaid, overworked, and exhausted. They are equally if not more important than the shortage of new hire candidates
Lynn Ouellette
30:28
The staffing is a huge problem and the fingerprinting is a huge delay in starting new staff that we so desparately need to allow us to take new children and in some instances support what we have when a staff member leaves.
cblanchette
30:29
Will we be mailed the results of the fingerprinting/ background checks after they are completed? What is the timetable of getting results back to directors?
Adrienne Hutchinson

Don't fingerprints have to be "livescan" not just ink?
Lynn Ouellette
36:42
So CCLU said to call State Police if you had already done the state check. When I called I was told I had to go portal as they weren't making appointments. So we registered the 3 people through the portal and paid the extra fee.

cblanchette
41:10
How and where can we view results of the background checks once completed?
Lisa Ranfos (she/her)
41:11
If people are finally getting applicants but can't get them fingerprinted, this just adds to the layers of barrier due to COVID. There has to be a way to make more capacity to allow for fingerprinting to be completed.
Liz Belsito
42:08
are there relief dollars coming down through the criminal justice system that can increase their capacity to process prints?
Katelyn Dennis
42:16
Understanding fingerprinting is federal rules, programs if cited for this by licensing should clearly write that the State is failing at being able to get programs/people fingerprints done timely.Parents/families looking for childcare should know this is not the childcares fault, that its a State issue.

Patti from Creative Kids Adventures in Grantham

Tammy Roberge
44:54
I agree parents need to know - with childcares closing or not being able to hire to get a spot in preschool/childcare for them to work - will certainly put some fire behind this issue.
Melissa
45:32
We tried calling and got no where. As soon as we were told about the online registration portal we got an appointment scheduled right away.
Tina Walker
45:43
Were State police ever told that staff that already had background checks were not to use Portal but to call for an appt? Each time we called we were told we had to use the portal which CCLU told us not too! (And often the State Police staff were rude!) Lynn Ouellette

Melissa, The appointment line sends us directly to the portal and are telling us that is the only way. We were told that if it was fingerprinting for the FBI check we needed to go through portal. I read right from the email you sent.

Though all this Covid, SELA stood behind us, listening to our hurdles and success. They helped us to over come supplies, health, and support for us. it was a once a week talk that helped ground our programs, to have a group of support from each other. Throughout the pandemic SELA has been an amazing support. Having an opportunity to be involved for a period without having to pay was amazing and we did become members rather than lose the services. It allows centers to talk together and understand the issues and support each other. The materials, cost saving and hub offers is extremely helpful for programs. The savings we get and support we get from SELA is invaluable. SELA should be supported and available to all centers.

Lisa Ranfos (she/her)
01:07:55
Lisa Ranfos, UNH CSDC - the percentage of income that is being used for childcare might be considered in addition to poverty level. How can access include those families whoa re stuck in the middle and it does not make sense for them to apply for the low funds they would get
Danielle Belliveau
01:08:02
Danielle Belliveau: Piggyback Rides & Slippery Slides- A better way of communicating changes with providers of eligibility. It is not uncommon to go into the system to bill for a child and find out the family has been shut off. We don't get the notice until 2 weeks after it is dated. The family can't afford to pay and we get stuck with the bill
Marc - White BIrch Center

Mary C

Patti from Creative Kids Adventures in Grantham
01:08:29
Creative Kids in Grantham firstly, we need to be able to staff our centers in order to meet the childcare need! Money for the families under discussion is a serious issue for them- many can't pay their cost share, but centers should not have to do without their full payment.

Judy
01:09:58
Judy Parkinson, New London Early Learning Center. it would be great to have the time frame for approval shortened as 30 days is along time for a program to wait for funds for children who ultimately are approved. And worse yet if a program waits 30 days and the child isn’t approved as families who qualify for the scholarship program probably won’t have 30 days worth of tuition in their bank account and they move on, leaving the center with no tuition coming.
Jackie Cowell, Early Learning NH
01:10:01
Jackie cowell, early learning NH follow federal recommendations: eligibility at 85% of state median income and rates at 75th percentile of market rate (AND do a true cost-of-care survey in addition)

Lynn Ouellette
01:11:03

Tammy Roberge
01:11:36
Tammy Labonte - Roberge I find a small school (16 children) but very well staffed with highly educated - especially one with a Master's Degree in Special Ed. that we get help in marketing to these families plus we are not taking families with state scholarship because it's not worth it for one or two families how can they still qualify and get help.

Lisa Ranfos, UNH - Debra, I would love to chat about this one specifically as there is an opportunity to rework the system instead of continuously lowering standards and requirements. Providing people with what they need to be successful should be considered and built in

Sec 6 We should support everyone accessing SELA. The benefits for providers and staff are amzing. Just the Aquire4 hire benefit saves so much in looking for staff. SELA supports prof dev so many ways. Savings on running centers is allowing more money to go to wages. AnneG

Free online trainings for staff as free time and cost can both be challenging

01:16:08
I, too, feel that SELA has been an important support to our program. The concept of shared services, and SELA in particular, seems particularly valuable to help stretch our limited resources. The more we work together, the stronger we will all be. Any additional support would be welcome and beneficial.
Linda Mencis

Free training would be awesome
Melissa
01:16:31
I feel the hours of development is fine. It would be great to have a combination of virtual training and in person. I also attended some great trainings through childcare aware but they were not recorded. It would be great if they were recorded so staff can watch anytime. It is hard to give staff time out of the room because of staffing and they are already burnt out from day to day work then they have to go home and do night time trainings.
Lynn Ouellette
01:16:44
CCRR and SELA offer lots of wonderful opportunities for training. Keeping trainings both live and online allows people to access these. We also need to maybe link the training requirements to the position of the individual. Expand the TEACH program to reach more individuals. STaff can not afford to pay for college courses and scholarship doesn't cover enough.
Kitty Larochelle

Access to SELA should be free to centers

I believe fixing the work force issue is bigger than the need for PD assistance. We look for staff with college credits and degrees but we pay them less than McDonalds.

01:19:57
Staff are so demoralized right now that asking them to give up a weekend day for 'work' even though they love their jobs and fellow staff is too much these days! Let's figure out how to pay the current hard working teachers, and devise an effective onboarding plan to attract new ones!

Development hours' requirement based on years of experience, so that our more experienced teachers have less hours to obtain annually, as opposed to a newer teacher. It can be difficult to find meaningful training for experienced teachers, so they end up taking courses just to check the required box.
Jax, Saplings
01:20:32
I think it's silly that fingerprints expire. Especially now that they're live scans, it's not like they take up space. Shouldn't all child care prints be in their own database and run for checks annually?
Melissa
01:20:34
So many people think of Childcare as "babysitting" gives a negative view. We need to show the public and especially high school students that this is a fun and rewarding career.

I have worked in the childcare 2- 5 years for more than 20 years and don't make any more back when I started than I do now. I'm lucky in that my income isn't my soul form of income anymore, but it was and I also received many state programs just to survive with my two children. This should never happen for this work force. I'd love to know how many childcare workers get state help in other areas and how much would the state safe if we could move workers out of needing this help.

change our title, we are teachers, no more "care provider" we are at the foundation of the child. Give the "teachers" a bump in pay, and benefits, as public schools have. Both childcare and schools are the stirrer in the drink. without us, no work.
Lynn Ouellette
01:23:25
Agreed Melissa! We need our staff but we need to pay them a professional salary/pay rate. Individuals if we are asking them to have degrees should be paid well. We need people with education and pedagogy to understand what they are doing as we our educating the future. You don't need a degree to work at McDonalds or in retail.
Adrienne Hutchinson
01:24:14
I agree Donna, our more experienced teachers are moving towards public school teaching jobs simply because there is such little chance for advancement/better paying jobs with benefits in this field.
Tina Summers, PIV
01:24:39
Paying our staff better wages is all tied to the economy, and how much our parents/customers can pay towards operational expenses. I would love to compensate staff more, but it is a balancing act with other expenses.
Tammy Roberge
01:25:21
Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH has a preschool in their tech program that high school students can take for 2 years if they are interested in working with children. I don't know specifics but I know a shift was made to move these students into being K - 12 teachers not early childhood... I 'heard" because they could not ethically send students to college for a degree they could not make enough money to pay student loans or be able to support themselves independently.

Increased wages solves everything-- I've always thought that if I could offer my teachers $50,000 a year and great benefits, I'd have no problems with hiring or quality because it would be a great job with a wage you could live on.

We can ask only so much from families before they can no longer attend. then its the teachers who need money to help support their own families this would bring MEN yes Men into our field that is so much needed for families that are a signal parent family.
