Yes. All SBIR Phase II winners are deep tech. So it works out that way.
Stacy Swider
28:38
But ultimately START pitches are a business plan pitch, similar to that you would make for an investor.
Stacy Swider
29:25
It's pretty easy to use Zoom to record yourself.

Do NSF Phase-I award winners qualify for the START program?
Marc Hodes
30:17
can we have figures in our 1000 word pasted part of the application
Stacy Swider
31:25
Only Phase II winners are eligible. But if you expect to get an award by April 1 we welcome you to apply. If you don't receive the P2 award in time, though, you will have to decline the START funds. (ineligible)

Thank you!

I don't think the 1000 word section takes figures, but you can show what you like in the 3 min video. PPT or demo, or just talk
Stacy Swider
32:19
YES! Phase IIB applies.
Stacy Swider
32:49
You can apply if in an accelerator. YES.

33:08
Was it mentioned that there will be 10 projected awards for Stage I and the value would be $100k per award?
Stacy Swider
33:46
The term "startup" is being used generally. Sometimes companies are consulting for years etc. then hit on an idea and pivot to a scalable mode. All P2 winners are welcome to apply

I wish there was a way we could get more funding for this program. COVID has been tough on small companies and many tech companies need to be in person to do lab work. Funding of $1million total for all phase 1 applicants seems low for MA since we get so many good startups and so many phase 2 SBIR awards.
Stacy Swider
34:49
Not sure about Delaware subsidiary. By MA statute (START funds are taxpayer funded) START funds must go to a MA firm.
Stacy Swider
35:21
Yes we are trying to double the program. Talking to the State.
Stacy Swider
35:43
Yes 10 awards $100k per. For round 1
Marcie Black
35:46
Let us know if we can help on getting more funding for this program.

36:32
A virtual business is fine, if it has a Certificate of Good Standing from the MA Dept of Rev.

My company has received several Phase II awards, but the technology we wish to promote to MassStart is unrelated to the SBIRs. Would we be eligible?
Stacy Swider
37:05
If you are concerned about eligibility email me at SSwider@mass-ventures.com
Stacy Swider
38:17
Yes so lots of companies are Delaware Corps but registered as MA businesses
Blaine Lafin
39:47
How many awards are projected for Stage 2 and Stage 3?
Stacy Swider
41:37
You cover use of funds in the question "how will START be helpfpul". If your application is one of the top 22, you will be invited to submit a pitch deck and to Stage 1 Pitch Day. At that time, a separate document is uploaded for use of funds, a simple table. We want a general idea; we understand priorities can change so if you change your need just call us.

So no Quad chart like previous years?
Stacy Swider

No quad chart

If the Phase II was awarded in the name of one company but there is now another company formed to commercialize, does that new company qualify?
Mehrdad Mehrvand
47:22
Should it be mentioned somewhere either in the video or 1000 words writing how this $100k will be spent? (in terms of budget lines)
Lenore Rasmussen
48:35
My understanding is that state-sponsored funding like START could be matched by Phase II B federal funding?
Lenore Rasmussen
49:36
Thx! Good to know
