@ Tracy, you should collaborate with like-minded colleagues in your area and lobby your legislature. This was how it was done in FL, along with the active support of the community. You may want to reach out to Dr. Kelley at some point to get further clarity on the history of how it got done in FL.

I teach my students about the civlizations of Axum, Nubia, Ghana, Mali, and Songhay. I had to do the research. I had to invest in books. I had to invest time to watch videos from history professors and take notes. I built a bibliography to address any potential detractors.

Love the analogy of learning a recipe.

Listening to students gives us insight into content and topics that will engage them. Five years ago, my students were asking about the uprising that was happening at that time in Baltimore after the extrajudicial execution of Freddie Gray while in police custody. We researched the social/economic/political/historical context that were the causes of what was being shown in the press.
Tamika Williams
54:19
Thank you so much for that analogy. I've never heard it like that!

The Aunt Gloria Project is a lesson that allows students at all K-12 levels to work with primary sources by interviewing elders. It was created in December 2014 at North Miami Middle School and expanded for all of Miami-Dade County the following June. It is available in Kreyol, Spanish, and English. It is named after acclaimed filmmaker Gloria Rolando who inspired the lessons in a conversation at NMMS #oralstorytelling #Griot
Renee OConnor

Miami-Dade School Board Member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall just released memo H9 that requires the district to enhance and or develop districtwide curriculum that addresses racism. This will include a student led taskforce that will report to the board quarterly. This is to be implemented for the upcoming school year.
