if you don't have the syrup( bottled smashed in transit) what can you use as a substitute?

It sounds like any simple syrup will do. Usually 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar boiled together. I sometimes use honey for the same general purpose, too.

I boiled 1 C. water and 1 C sugar then added 1 T allspice berries and 1 cinnamon stick for simple syrup. (10 mins)
