Look for the USDA Organic Label

56:34
Can you discuss Regenerative Organic?

56:45
Do you have any school aged curricula that you can share with this info?

56:47
How does regenerative compare to organic?

56:59
How can we make organic produce available through DoD Fresh?

57:32
Shoko, great question. We’d love to work with you on that, please be in touch!

57:56
Please check out leanandgreenkids.org for nutrition education resources that promote organic and plant-based eating with “lean and green beans” for plant-protein!

58:26
Turning Green is an amazing program!!!

58:35
I love Lori Davis’s question about school-aged curricula! Would love to hear about that.

58:51
conscious kitchen ❤️❤️❤️

59:12
Lean and Green Kids has lots of school friendly recipes go to leakandgreenkids.org

59:43
@Beth and @Lori, as Barbara and Gail mentioned - Lean and Green Kids! They've got great curricula there.

59:52
Side note: supporting you school food services helps them generate revenue to be able to afford organic produce :) (so long as it’s on their agenda to expand upon of course)

01:03:09
The Conscious Kitchen Case Study report will be shared in a follow-up email to participants!

01:03:58
We have a list of minor and major equipment needs and costs in the study

01:05:24
@Pauline Seales - the farming methods that make organic successful (crop rotation, composting, etc) are the same methods that underpin "regenerative agriculture." There is a lot of wonderful work happening under the banner of regenerative ag, but there is no agreed upon definition, and it doesn't necessarily result in reductions in use of synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. However, the Regenerative Organic is a true north star, because it uses organic as a baseline (which is a robust federally-regulated label) and adds additional criteria on top that ensure farmers do all they can to sequester carbon in the soil.

01:08:09
I would like to know more about the milk machine!! Can you link the model?

01:09:50
Our students are building a regenerative agriculture Community Garden in masks over nose and mouth and social distancing. I founded an environmental education organization NGO EARTHCARE. I am a marine biologist in the Bahamas. https://www.earthcare.online/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/EARTHCARE

01:10:18
@amber mascio There are several school districts who have been serving bulk milk. Straus Family Creamery has been a partner in working with school districts, specifically Bay Area and lower income communities, to serve bulk organic milk.

01:11:29
i have been having difficulty sourcing a good milk distributor. I work in humboldt county California

01:11:30
Nice Judi! Well done.

01:11:54
Thank you!

How has the pandemic impact the work with Conscious Kitchen?

01:25:49
@barbara this is amazing.. such incredible work

01:26:04
Thank you, Barbara!

01:26:21
Well done, Barbara!

01:26:28
Key 5 strategies: • Serving fresh and scratch-cooked meals through investment in workforce and kitchen infrastructure• Expanding organic and regional sourcing through diverse supply chains• Designing plant-forward menus for healthy, cost-effective and climate-friendly meals• Reducing food and packaging waste• Educating and engaging students and the school community

01:26:43
Congratulations! Amazing presentations.

01:27:12
Thank you so much, sorry I have to run! This has been great so far.

01:27:14
Great job, Barbara! Exciting to see how you’re serving your community.

01:27:21
We encourage every group member to introduce themselves and participate by answering the following questions:1) Which of these Conscious Kitchen strategies would be most exciting to you? Or which would be most viable in your school district or community?2) What resources or support would you need to implement these strategies?

01:27:24
We already prepare Meals from scratch

01:33:55
Inspiring

01:33:55
I love the giving spirit and desire to help others during this pandemic

01:33:59
Resistance to serving climate friendly food because they say kids won’t eat it, so taste tests are really importnat

01:34:05
Love that we had two MPH students in our group. We need you all!!

01:34:32
Need for more buy in from staff

01:34:59
My group discussed how school districts could work together to build supply chains in order to procure organic, particularly milk

01:35:36
When bidding the requirement to go with the lowest bid makes it hard to purchase from organic vendors.

01:35:43
Utilize Organic Produce more

01:35:45
Nutrition education and farm time are musts to encourage the kids to eat the food

01:35:46
Bulk food going home to families is a cost savings and is also a way to have more families make food at home - be more involved in providing food. Bulk food enables more $ to be spent on organic.

01:35:57
Lack of necessary facilities and equipment also is a barrier.

01:36:10
Budget/financing - eco-friendly containers, organic product as they are not currently available through DoD Fresh, also priced higher when purchasing produce contractor

01:36:19
Have any of you taken any small steps for your meal programs that you’d like to share with the group?

01:36:47
Everyone in our chat room had a very different situation. one model will never work for everyone this is why Judi

01:38:50
Another issue for a small rural district is their small purchases and desire to collaborate with others to find organic vendors. Partnering with other schools in regional partnerships could help.

01:39:38
@Debbie yes I am interested to collaborate

01:39:40
Started with plant based products that look and taste similar to familiar non plant proteins. Must have great flavor and presentation to build trust

01:39:51
USDA Farm to School grant: https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=329449 [Due January 8th]

01:42:27
We use our local Food Hub for organic produce. They advocate for livable wages for local farmers, yet their prices are still competitive with conventional produce and vendors. Also we have moved from part time staff positions to full time. Full time invests in our community, builds upon training annually. We are in the RED budget wise due to labor costs. This is important to recognize that many districts do not have this advantage.

01:43:11
We are a rural district.

01:43:24
@Kat Soltanmorad Thank you for your leadership and to your team for all you do for kids!
