I tell people it is super helpful if you are a reader of these magazines before you P itch to them. You have a sense and buildup of what you are doing and let's you know if writers are already covering these topics.

The other thing is job is to make a good impression and first pitch is your encounter with an editor.

You want to put your best foot forward here in case pitch doesn't work for a reason or another other thing to keep in mind is maybe this editor will think about you when something else from the topic comes up and they can reach out to you or you can reach out to them again.
