Question from B Muhammed: Historically, who has worked to be our allies and who has worked to be our chaperones?
Ellorah J Wood
01:29:15
I know that epigenetic studies have been done on the decedents of survivors of the Holocausts. Are there studies that have been done on children of those who survived though Jim Crow, slavery, and other racially traumatic events in US history? Where would I be able to find published information on these studies?
Shawnte Thompson
01:32:38
Studies? Everyday is a study, as it's still happening present-day. If you'd like some books to give you more insight. Try "The New Jim Crow", "Medical Apartheid", "They Came Before Columbus". I could shoot off a million of them, but that's a "start".

02:07:07
What advice or strategies might you have for us to continue this work and having these conversations to kind of confront workplace environments, structures/bureaucracy or institutions where these issues are perceived as being political rather than the systemic public health and safety issues that they actually are?
Donna Cole
02:08:29
What about adding something like "participating in equity and diversity opportunities" as part of an employee's performance evaluation so that it is discussed with their supervisor once or twice a year? I know this may sound radical, but we need systemic change!
Sharon Williams
02:12:06
Dr. McManus, you spoke of systems, specifically the justice system. Police reform is definitely needed, however, abolishing chokeholds, de-escalation training etc, don't really get at the root issues. From your point of view, what needs to happen with police departments throughout this country?
Hope Devougas
02:12:44
Yes Dr. McManus!
Michelle Watts
02:13:32
What are your thoughts as it relates to racism and historical trauma with Atty Stephanie Rapkin spitting on a minor? Any comments regarding her charges and actions?

02:22:18
Do you agree that we should position ourselves as Police Commissioners and serve on civilian oversight boards so that we have a seat at the table and influence change?...your fellow NBNA Member:)
Sharon Williams
02:23:45
A symbiotic relationship definitely exist between the police, the DA and the judges.
Jack Phillips
02:24:06
To what extent can "reform" do anything for a system built from the ground up on exploitation? When so much of the economy is still based on prison labor, for example, making policing a profit-driven industry on top of its white supremacist foundations, can the system ever be remade from within to serve the people?
CXS304
02:24:55
Thank you Dr. McManus!
Mirtha Sosa Pacheco
02:25:33
As a follow up to Sharon's question, and Jack Phillip's comment. There is an important discussion happening nationally in the vein of police DEFUNDING and redistribution of that $$ to communities. What are some thoughts regarding this redistribution from Policing over to every single budget that hangs by a thread yearly in Milwaukee - MPS (lack of nurses, therapists, counselors, building upgrades), staffing the County parks, the city's built environment and state of the streets and sidewalks in near north side and southside neighborhoods, the old lead pipes throughout the city, ETC ETC
Sharon Williams
02:27:19
LOL
Mirtha Sosa Pacheco
02:27:21
Focusing on the health and wellness of the community, not on policing which has always targeted BIPOC and the poor.

Are there differences and benefits to passing laws that require states to count inmates as citizens of their hometown rather then their in the town they are incarcerated in, as well as voting rights for prisoners? This ideas are slightly conflicting but are not mutually exclusive. What would be the barriers to allowing this change?

Tiffany Grant
03:36:24
I have always thought that black involvement in medical research has the potential to right some medical injustices in the black community. I have always wondered if black people are truly at higher risk for certain illness and disease because we are black or if this is a manifestation of systemic racism. We have been forced to exist in conditions that perpetuate health disparities through centuries of oppression. Could you speak on this, and how public health initiatives would need to evolve and how we could help to drive this change?
Bashir Easter
03:37:39
Powerful presentation!
Atifa Robinson
03:40:41
Please don’t forget that we will have Q& A following her presentation. Please put your questions in the chat.

wonderful presentation!!
Heather Janes
03:46:27
Excellent information!
Jack Phillips
03:46:41
"Social determinants of equity include … economic systems like capitalism" YES! So same question basically: It feels like examining racism in a vacuum doesn't explain *why* there's been such inertia on racial justice nearly as well as examining racism as a tool for driving economic growth (ie via slavery and its modern incarnation, prison labor) and maintaining an exploitable population (ie by policing Living While Black). Can Capitalism, then, with its foundations of inequity, exploitation of especially Black people and POC domestically and entire countries abroad, be reformed? Will a profit motive ever allow for true racial justice?
Beverly Hutcherson
03:46:43
Dr Johnson killed this!
William Parke-Sutherland (he, him)
03:46:45
Thank you so much! How do you recommend we study and discuss the impact of white supremacy and structural racism on white people without again centering whiteness and white people?
Veronica Medina-Ordaz

Very informative
Michelle Watts
03:48:40
Extremely essential and valuable information shared in today's presentation. Thank you so much Dr. Johnson. Greatly appreciated this presentation!!!!
Gail Nahwahquaw
03:49:44
Thank you Sheri! How do we overcome the misuse of "our" data, so that we can truly tell "our" stories. I like you're suggestions about reframing research questions to help get us to the true core of health equity.
Eva Vivian
03:51:03
Dr. Johnson, thank you for speaking truth. African Americans have been 'shamed' into accepting various forms of racism. The stress associated with exposure to ongoing racism is a cause of chronic disease such as hypertension, diabetes, etc.
Gail Nahwahquaw
03:51:22

Elzia Sekou

I love your idea of looking at things holistically and consider the System Dynamics of the entity (i.e. person, political sys, corporation etc.). We have to begin to study and understands the inter-relatedness of the system and how to approach a problem.

Also according to the field of Epigenetics environment plays a part in how the DNA fires - so if we or our parents are constantly under stress this can create a change the function or firing of the DNA which will effect the person and the chemical release in the body
