Yes, Dawn. That comment is dismissive. We need to see color because it impacts our daily lives.
Kathleen Cannon
01:00:09
white privilege is real and we white people need to recognize how this impacts everything including and especially systemic racism

Correct, Thelma!

01:06:22
inter-generational trauma is also a form of trauma
Rafis Nin, LCSW
01:07:17
Yes, you are right inter-generational trauma is another form of trauma.
LOVETTE-DERRICK
01:09:07
Agree, you're so right
Patricia Lyons
01:16:47
So you can imagine how our black young men feel just living their livs
LOVETTE-DERRICK
01:17:32
I am a black man and sometimes live in a little fear of what is going on in this world
Rafis Nin, LCSW

I wanted to share that Asian community also differs from just Asian. I myself identify as SouthAsian Indian who is American Born.
Patricia Lyons
01:30:23
I think that if a person becomes sensitive to someone being offended, they should address it with the offender because sometimes people that are discriminated against tend not to address it as they don't want to raise issues. If you feel it address it, maybe one on one with the alleged offender
Sandra Cumper
01:30:46
I believe it is important to correct those unintentional microaggressions as a means of educating others
Seraiah Beltran
01:30:50
thankyou!
Patricia Lyons
01:31:17

sblake
01:35:04
i too have cried daily. thanks for sharing. we understand
Elkin Alfred
01:35:35
Same, I've cried more during the last three weeks than all of last year.
Sophie Bellevue
01:35:46
Having a therapy session and mindfulness helped me. Also speaking to friends and praying.
Casandra H.
01:36:06
How do you deal when others minimize your experience…I had a white colleague get offended and “go off” because I didn’t wants shoes with a white character on them. As a black woman with a 1 year old I have to over compensate with black imagery to help and build my daughters self esteem before she faces the world… Instead of seeking to understand my perspective she pretty much called me a racist….. minimizing my experience.

What do you do with that when they minimize our experiences
Rafis Nin, LCSW
01:37:45
Tears are okay, and to share your feelings with safe people. It is painful to think about the danger your son or spouse, and the family member can face for being black and brown. It is okay to cry.
Elkin Alfred
01:38:18
I suggest that you use your EAP if you do not have a therapist
Sophie Bellevue
01:39:22
That Sesame Street Town Hall was exceptional. I agree.
Rafis Nin, LCSW
01:41:19
Tamara, this is a good point and question. we can ask this question in the next Q&A time. It is a great question to explore here on how to be there for those crying and hurting, when we are not black ourselves.
Sama Patel
01:41:50
Yes! That is soo true! I had to learn to do eye contact I keep getting trouble in school when teachers were not getting eye contact from me!

01:44:12

Carlos Smith
01:49:11
Think about all the energy put into just explaining to our black children what they HAVE to do just to come home safely every night; Imagine if all that energy was put into teaching them to reach for the stars and that they could be anything that they want to be. Imagine if they could put that energy of being scared into being the best they could be.
fssdcps
01:50:44

nameless condition, could it be due to the dominate culture that dominates the DSM board??
Seraiah Beltran
01:57:43
Aisha thank you for doing the emotional labor necessary to put on this exemplary training despite the depth of pain you’ve been feeling and experiencing the past few weeks. That is not easy to do, I really don’t know if I could have.
jessica charles
02:05:21
Great training. I wish everyone would watch this.
Adrienne Bey
02:05:57
I agree that the nameless condition is related to the dominant culture dominating the DSM Board. However, I have to disagree that there is a scarcity of research on the effects racial trauma has on mental health. There are many black psychologists who have researched and published their findings. The issue is that black voices are not validated and believed; even 'educated' black voices. Look up Dr. Joy DeGruy and Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, just to name two.
Rafis Nin, LCSW
02:06:08
Please, type your questions as we will be going over some of these before ending the training. We want to hear your questions and comments. Thank You for your participation and for being here.
Sandra Cumper
