You mentioned Rashi's halachic stance. As I started reading, I was assuming that what you described as his family's practices were factual but later realized they could be fictional. I'm curious: How much should we take literally? i.e., did you have halachic bases (from the responsa you studied) to write that Rashi ate vegetarian food prepared in non-kosher pots by non-Jews, for example, or that men and women did touch each other before marriage?
