After two weeks, Helen returns homesick to the Keller's, and despite Annie's attempts to teach her, she still fails to get through to her. When Helen is at the homecoming party, she immediately reverts from all the hard work and manners Annie has taught her so far, and despite the Keller's protests she attempts to punish/reteach her after her "testing" of the keller's and annie, and when captain Keller comes to stop her, James, in an act of unforeseen gut, stops him, standing up to his "world." while making helen refill a pitcher, annie pours water into her hand and spells into her hand at the same time, thus causing the final miracle, and helen finally understands what words are, finishing the play.
