Hello everyone.ATIF ABDALLA
Nawal sharabati
28:15
I like to use النوع الاجتماعي for gender! But sometimes the client does not accept the translation, they prefer نوع الجنس أو الجندر؟!
Dalia Abdul Haleem
28:43
Maybe! I didn't check it honestly! Thanks for explaining that!
Majdoleen - LEBANON
29:06

30:14
I think المنظور الجنساني is very frequent nowadays.
Ambra Sottile
30:16
Check also your audio settings to make sure that it’s working
Ambra Sottile
30:34
If the above doesn’t work, no worries, we are recording the session and you will be able to watch it later :)
Dalia Abdul Haleem
31:01
Thanks @Majdoleen
Kamal Idkaidek
32:01
Why is it a problem that "everybody" is masculine? In Greek which is a european language, they have the same rule.If one person in the group is masculine and the rest are fem. then it becomes masculine.
Radwa Saad
32:38
could we get the slides after the webinar?
Ambra Sottile
33:25
Hi Radwa, yes I think so, I will add them to the forum thread https://community.translatorswb.org/t/celebrate-the-international-volunteer-day-during-twbs-arabic-language-week/43241
Wafa Elmaghbub
33:30
Yes, we would like to get the presentation if possible! :)
Radwa Saad
34:17
thank you @Ambra🙏🏻
Kamal Idkaidek
34:21
"أوساط أكاديمي"I don't think this is correct.
Fatema Khan Ali
34:25
Does trying to include everyone i.e be gender neutral contradicts with trying to make the text as readable and easy to understand as possible?
Fatema Khan Ali
34:48
If so what is the priority
Ambra Sottile
34:56
Great point, Fatema. I guess it depends on how the source text is structured and the needs of the target audience - let’s see what our experts say!
Yosra Gharbi
35:08
I don't think it is necessarily a problem that some people have with the gender rule, but rather that the world (including language) is trying to be use more friendly inclusive language (so people do not feel left out of the conversation). This is at least what most people aim for.
bourai samira
35:11
yes and also borrowed words are invading the language
Nawal sharabati
35:15
I think we can use الطلَلبة for students to avoid using الطلاب والطالبات as الطَلبة means all the students regardless their gender
Kamal Idkaidek
35:36
I agree with you Nawal.
Dalia Abdul Haleem
39:00
In general, we use the masculine and it refers to both males and females! We use this if we don't know the pronoun!
Raihane KHOUISSAT
39:15
I personally don't think that reading الطالب instead of الطالبة would be a problem or leave me feeling excluded! Still, I like the way Ms. Thalia Rahme has approached inclusivity. The use of the plural form is genius!
Dalia Abdul Haleem
39:55
just to avoid any kind of repetition!
bourai samira
40:10
I think that even the Arabic culture isn't fully open to such topics that's what will make this process longer to solve
Fayeq Oweis
40:45
hello everyone,
Mahmoud Taher
40:53
شاذ doesn't mean pervert
lama Alsaleem
41:27
sometimes we use the plural structure when talking or addressing people for the first time as a sign of respect, and I think it works all the time
Ola Amin
41:35
Hi there, I came late, so any possibility to share the slides
bourai samira
41:48
and it's can forgiven to address people by the gender that you see. and rarely people would get offended
Fayeq Oweis
42:44
what Google and Face book have implemented by translating almost all content to 3 different form: masculine, feminine, and a no gender form. then allow algorithms to display the correct form.. this has solved most of the issuses
Mohamed Salah Aissa Larousse
43:32
I've raised my hand. Hopefully, i will get to ask it before the end of this webinar.
Omaymah Al-Rabbai
45:09
I don't think it's a problem, I mean we are used to using the masculin for both genders.
Fella Selsabila HADJ AISSA
45:31
In my humble opinion, the demands of such groups you mentioned are somehow exaggerated and not based on scientific basis. They are rather idiological and purely meant to criticize religion and Arabic language. Therefore, scientifically speaking, I don't see any problem in using male words to refer to females as any other language, like English. This is just my personal opinion and thank you for your presentation ☺️
Omaymah Al-Rabbai
45:57
The problem is only there when using the singular form only
Mohamed Issak
47:20
What if the mascular plural word includes females too? Do I still have to look for another word?
Kamal Idkaidek
48:41
I can answer regarding Greek. They have the "polite" manner where you can use plural instead of singular. So, like حضرتكم".solves the problem, but I've seen that "@" is used for pronouns when you can't determine the gender.
bourai samira
49:10

58:40

Nawal sharabati
59:28
Thank you Samir’s, I switched it to everyone
Kamal Idkaidek
59:35
so we put الناجييون/ات
Nawal sharabati
59:49
Yes the language is changing as well as people
Omaymah Al-Rabbai
59:58
Isn't it the ordinary thing to use one form that represents the majority?
Nawal sharabati
01:00:14
I think the most important thing to know the audience you are translating to
Kamal Idkaidek
01:00:20
Or just type the whole second word in full.
Kamal Idkaidek
01:00:35
As in the Holy Quran.
Mariem Ichentane
01:00:45
it's important to address marginalized minorities especially in sensitive cases
Kamal Idkaidek
01:03:07
This topic needs more time to debate. Inmho, lignuists and scholars have to discuss thus.
Kamal Idkaidek
01:04:07
The same applies to IT and games.
