Eric Robinson - Why did you put $75,000 of your own money into the campaign?
DeeAnna Dowdle

Helping students learn about human sexuality helps the students make more educated choices.  Currently students are eligible to take the human sexuality course unless the parent wants to opt-out.  Would you change this procedure in any way and why?
Mirella Glasberg

To all candidates:The U.S. is by far the most infected country in the world with COVID-19. At present Florida is the state with highest numbers of new cases in the country, with around 10,000 daily new cases for the past week. Schools went on lockdown in mid March 16; remote learning was put in place and lasted until summer vacation started. Comment on Gov de Santis opinion that he expressed today “I don’t think that the school children are the primary vector of spread” and talk about the numbers of students, teachers, school staff and parents that could be at risk if the schools reopen in less than a month.
Norman Wirtz
18:42
Karen Rose - did you buy a condo just to have a residence in the district you are running in?
Kindra Muntz
18:55
Since Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran has stated “All public education should be voucherized”, and the Florida legislature is accelerating efforts to pass laws to create voucher programs that drain funds from public schools and encourage students to transfer to private schools--which are beyond the control of the School Board--isn’t it a conflict of interests to have someone on the Board whose source of significant income is managing dozens of PACs that pass money from one to another, many of which support the very legislators who pass the laws for the voucher programs?
Tom Walker
19:29
In a reply to a questionnaire from Christian Family Coalition Florida, you answered YES to the question "Should County schools respect the right of Christian students and faculty to celebrate their religious holidays in the classroom as well as the school?" Would you let a Muslim student celebrate in the classroom as well?
Norman Wirtz

Incumbants: Fedrick Ingram, President of the Florida Education Association, filed a lawsuit yesterday (July 21) regarding not reopening our schools in the state of Florida for the safekeeping of all involved on public school campuses. As incumbents, what is proposed regarding a reset, retrain, and relaunch program for Sarasota county public schools in a time with 17,000+ cases of COVID-19 are of children under the age of 18 and there is a 13.4% positivity rate?
Norman Wirtz

Karen Rose - Why did you disappear for days during and after Irma when you were needed to help.
Ashleigh James

How are the new BEST standards going to impact student achievement in Sarasota County?
Megan Touchstone
23:53
All Candidates: As a high risk student of the Sarasota county school system I am concerned about the opening of the schools. How will we enforce the wearing of PPE in our schools (for example mask over the nose) and properly social distance? Kids may not be as high risk as adults, however these children can spread the virus to their families and further contribute to the spread of COVID-19. I understand we could lose our funding from not opening, however I am highly concerned for the safety of our community.
Lori England

The governor stated today that students and teachers should have a choice on whether or not we return to brick and mortar. Where is the teacher's choice?

All candidates: How do you plan to support the arts in our schools?
Tom Walker
25:57
The question above about the Christian Family Coalition was for Karen Rose and Eric Robinson.
Todd Walston
26:42
What protections do you advocate for teachers and staff who are infected by Covid while working? Will you support income relief or pay for employees who are forced off work because they are working as front line employees in full classes with little to no social distancing?
DeeAnna Dowdle
27:57
I am concerned with allowing religious and discriminatory belief systems preventing the rights of our children who follow their own identities. Will you do all in your power to protect the human dignity and rights of LGBTQ+, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, Black, Amerindian, Latino, differently abled and other students from oppressed populations? If so, how will you do so?
Norman Wirtz
28:09
Why would the question about the Christain Family Coalition be for Rose and Robinson only?
Alan Dee
29:45
when was Karen Rose last in a classrooms a teacher?
Robin Williams
30:39
As a retired high school biology and microbiology teacher there are too many uncontrolled variables in a school setting in the midst of a raging pandemic to keep everyone safe. We must not let our students, staff, parents and families be used as lab rats in a mega experiment. We need to keep education virtual until there is a safe vaccine and effective medications and treatments.
Mary Palermo
30:57
why did Karen Rose spend $125,000 for a one bedroom condo off Clark Rd to qualify for running for $40,000 School Board position? Why after leaving 6 months early from Middle School administrative position 3 years ago?
carolann palm-abramoff
31:22
With the Covid crisis allowing students to distance learn, do you think this could be a permanent option for those who learn best this way?
Ashleigh James
32:04
Do you believe there is racial and/or socioeconomic inequalities in this district? If so, how do you plan to address this?
Laura Semian
33:09
Any district that opens face-to-face should NEVER use "data driven" ever again to describe their academic mission when they choose to ignore the overwhelming amount of data we have re: COVID
Lisa S
33:22
Karen Rose - you acquired a condominium in April 2019 after losing the school board election in the district where you reside. There is a #10 transfer deed on record with the county. Do you actually reside here, or is it just a placeholder address so that you could file to run for this election?
Lisa S
33:53
edit - $10, not #10
Mary Palermo
34:57
Why is Dan Miller the husband of Karen Rose, the attack dog for Karen Rose in spreading lies about her opponent - David Graham:? Does karen support Dan Miller blatant lies about David Graham?
DeeAnna Dowdle
35:02
Rose: You say you will protect the emotional well being of our students. Yet, you support denying the right of non-binary and non-cis-gender students’ dignity to have their gender identity respected. Please explain how you will maintain an emotionally healthy space for LGBTQ+ students when you agree with a statement that deems “gender-identity” a not recognized existence (“so called gender identity”).
Alan Dee
36:33
Eric Robinson: Where do your children go to school? Why?
Lisa S
37:27
Karen Rose - in the 2018 election cycle where you lost to Shirley Brown, you were asked in various forums about whether or not you would join Eric Robinson’s and Bridget Ziegler’s astroturf education privatization organization, the FCSBM, or the statewide traditional school board member’s organization who recently assisted with our superintendent search, the FSBA. Have you decided yet which organization you would join, and why?
Dennis Rees
38:56
Governor DeSantis vetoed funding for Sarasota Learning Academies. What did you do to prevent this horrible attack on the most vulnerable students?

Doreen Dupont 4 Charter Review Board 2
39:51
Mary Palermo asked some questions about Karen Rose that she didn’t address. I’d like to know why she walked early from a middle school position?
joan
40:50
candidates will not be answering specific questions on the chat.
joan
41:48
they are involved in the active discussions. we are monitoring questions for later in the program
Robin Williams

Beatrice Stodola
42:41
What will you do to eencourage diversity in the teaching staff
Laura Semian
43:09
we SHOULD be investing in remote learning NOW!!!
Lisa S
43:20
David Graham and Tom Edwards - the SCTA, who spent $100,000 through related PAC money transfers in 2018 on Karen Rose’s losing election, has endorsed both Karen Rose and Eric Robinson in this election cycle. Were either of you invited to meet and interview with the SCTA, and is it true that endorsements were made before one or both of you even filed to run?
Laura Semian
43:25
that's where all resources should be going right now...
Doreen Dupont 4 Charter Review Board 2
43:45
he is100% right
Ernesto Rendon
44:25
Does Eric Robinson always refer to Eric Robinson in the third person
Mary Palermo
44:50
Eric Robinson has said he doesn't agree with Dan Miller attacks on Karen's opponent, who he knows uses his Facebook account to attack David Graham as Karen's attack dog. So why would Eric partner with Karen Rose in his mailers and campaign? Why would he want her on the School Board with him then?
Martin Trueb
44:51
So how many kids are dying because they are not able to go to school.
Sue Maloney
44:58
What is the viewpoint of each candidate on whether new charter schools should be allowed? Under what criteria should a new charter school be considered?
Jo Fon
45:02
remote learning does not always work..ask teachers if they were able to get to all their students ...
Liz Ballard
45:09
that isn’t something classroom teachers can pivot to Eric
Nick Guy
45:15
I want a school board that’s going to fight for the district and push back against the state when they mandate awful decisions like reopening in Aug.
Amy Weinberger
45:17
That is not how Florida Virtual School works.A student would have already had to be enrolled via the school or a homeschool.
Liz Ballard
45:22
not in two weeks
Martin Trueb
45:30
You need to care about the students more than the teachers.
Jo Fon
45:45
you need to care about both
Liz Ballard
45:55
very disingenuous answer
Laura Semian
46:02
Sarasota Virtual School (SVA) and Florida Virtual School (SLVS) are identical... the difference is the teacher of record... SVA keeps it local and the $ in the county
Laura Semian
46:07
FLVS
Mirella Glasberg
46:17
I agree with Nick Guy: I also “want a school board that’s going to fight for the district and push back against the state when they mandate awful decisions like reopening in Aug."
Amy Weinberger
46:31
In other words, FLVS works on a semester basis so a student would have already would have had to be enrolled. It is not a canned program for non-enrolled students. Eric did not represent FLVS well. Our teachers did do well, but they need support as much as the students.
Doreen Dupont 4 Charter Review Board 2

COVID19 is spread by forceful breath indoors. extra cleaning people are not going to help
Jo Fon

forceful breath? hardly
Jean Etsinger
47:23
Most school systems across the nation always start the school year after Labor Day. Especially since August is the hottest month of the year, why not make the change now and make it permanent?
Liz Ballard
47:48
yes
Sue Maloney
47:52
I am concerned that one of these candidates has three children who do not attend our public schools as that reflects badly in the community on whether our public schools are “good enough.” what is the opinion of each candidate on this marred?
Jo Fon
48:52
some of us are new here. who has 3 children not in public schools? sounds like Devoz who sent her kids to private schools!
Ashleigh James
49:07
Why doesn’t the district look at a synchronous option so that students can learn from class and home at the same time so there will be a seamless transition for students back into the classroom?
Martin Trueb
49:09
I went to school in the midst of polito, small pox, measles, chicken pox and the like. We are emphasized healthy practices. Just getting sick does not kill you.
anna nekoranec
50:03
For Tom Edwards, how many students are there in Sarasota County and how many active pediatric cases are there in Sarasota County? In addition, are you familiar with ESSA and what percentage of students in Sarasota are on subsidized lunches and may not have access to effective distance learning because both parents need to work? How will you deal with this? Wouldn’t it be more fair to the disadvantaged students to find an effective plan to have a combination of distance and brick and mortar learning?
Laura Semian
50:42
remote learning and virtual school are NOT the same...
Mirella Glasberg
51:57
COVID-19 is no child common disease. It’s deadly. Wake up to 150,000 deaths in this country alone!
Jo Fon
52:27
with no cure...and it's mutating as we speak!
Robin Williams
53:07
Mr. Robinson and Ms. Rose, will you tell Gov DeSantis and Corcoran that it is not safe to open schools for anyone now?
Louise Machinist
53:56
But Karen stepped out…
Mirella Glasberg
54:01
Any responsible government official, including School Board members, have the duty to help CONTAIN the pandemic. Federal government as well as many governors are in fact helping to SPREAD the pandemic!
Amy Weinberger
54:34
Sarasota Virtual school has a start date and an end date. It is not the solution.
carolann palm-abramoff

It’s not fair to make teachers choose between their lives and their careers and economic survival. Reopening schools in the middle of a pandemic in the most infected state in the most infected country is ABSURD!
Amy Weinberger
55:55
Our county engaged Emergency Remote Learning which is different than distance learning.
Laura Semian
56:15
what happens if a HUGE number of teachers take leave?
Mary Palermo
56:30
Sarasota has many public charter schools What do you believe that the district's and school board's relationship with Sarasota's public charter schools should be???
Amy Weinberger
56:34
The teachers need to be heard and to be at the table creating the options!!!
Colleen
56:36
He means take the REMOTE route and not the virtual route. He should be able to get the language correct. It's confusing when it's inaccurate. And who is saying ANYTHING against the teachers?????
Louise Machinist

Those who are there are the best—but many choose not to take a job here if the pay is too low

I am worried about those that I live with, one member of our household is 87 years old.

Sarasota teachers work 30 min. more per day, thus when one looks at their pay, in light of the fact they work longer hours per week, their pay is not great.

Q to Mr. Robinson: Please address the LTE by a school district or board assistant who criticized you for introducing personalized dissension and chaos to the Board and asked you to resign?
Christine Swenson

has any candidate thought about the limitation of substitutes for licensed & non licensed staff when a staff member gets sick? I don’t believe there will be an abundance of substitutes waiting to work in a Covid-19 school.
Sue Maloney

01:12:12
Will the candidates call for Gov DeSantis and state legislators to increase unemployment insurance both in amount and for the duration of the pandemic so that parents who can't work virtually don't have to choose between their children's health and financial ruin? Will they call on Senators Rubio and Scott to pass the Heroes Act to also help with financial support to families?

Joe Schmoe

Norman Wirtz
01:20:20
David Graham’s opponent: Karen Rose1) Eric Robinson is Karen’s finance manager. Is that unethical? Is that collusion? Will Karen be Eric’s puppet?2) During Hurricane Irma when schools were open as shelters, it was all hands-on-deck for every administrator. SHE COULDN’T BE FOUND BY THE SUPERINTENDENT. Where was Karen?3) Karen walked away from her position as the Executive Director of Middle Schools on a Friday, mid-year, with no warning. For the SECOND TIME, she abandoned her principals and students without leadership. Where was Karen?
Nick Guy
01:20:26
Not every charter does a lottery. They get money in two waves. There is plenty of evidence all over where schools get that 2nd payment from the district for X number of students and then “release” them for whatever cooked up reason. They then have to go back to the public schools, without funding, total scam.
Norman Wirtz
01:20:32
Tom Edward’s opponent: Eric Robinson1) Since 2010, Eric has administered 90+ GOP political campaign PACs ($22 million). Eric is called the Prince of Dark Money.2) An investigation of Eric was initiated by the Florida Elections Commission. Eric got caught.3) Eric does not trust Sarasota Public Schools. ERIC’S CHILDREN GO TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL. Eric got caught.4) Eric is a bully who intimidates the staff and undermines other board members. During a meeting, he texted disparaging remarks about another board member to the Sheriff. Eric got caught.
Kelli Maldonado
01:20:33
Thanks Mary! Saw that, but curious what that will look like in action for each candidate. What will the do to support arts education?
Gretchen Lienhop
01:20:40

This letter was published on the Opinion page of the Herald-Tribune in April 2018:“Ex-assistant tells Robinson to resign from School BoardI recently retired from the Sarasota County School Board after serving 30 years as administrative assistant to the executive director of elementary schools and five superintendents. My last five years were spent as administrative assistant to the five School Board members.I can personally attest that it was a pleasure and privilege to work with the board members and superintendents Lori White and Todd Bowden, who always worked together for the good of the students. They did not always agree but were respectful of each other’s opinion and supportive of the “will of the board.” There was never a cloud of distrust. But that all changed when Eric Robinson came aboard. From the very beginning he caused nothing but chaos among other board members, staff and administrators with his bullying, accusatory approach to every issue. It was clear from the start he was all about po

Eric Robinson - according to a recently published booklet by Cathy Antunes, your name has been on approximately 90 PAC’s that have moved $90 million dollars to political candidates who are elected to the state legislature who then support privately operated charter schools and voucher schools. That’s part of your record too, as part of your job duties and your role in the Republican party - correct?

Robin Williams
01:24:47
Why have Mr. Robinson and Ms. Rose said they are in support of the right of Christian students and faculty to celebrate their religious holidays in the classroom and school and also allow students to use school time to speak openly about their faith, including a prayer at graduation? Doesn't this use class time for issues that are outside the curriculum, discriminate against other religious and nonreligious groups and isn't it a violation of the separation of church and state?
Sue Maloney
01:26:03
If Eric Robinson feels our public schools are so “great,” why has he always sent his three children to private schools? By doing that, he seems to be implying that our public schools aren’t “great?” As Eric just said, our schools do have wonderful AP, magnet, and accelerated programs so his children should attend our schools.
Robin Williams
01:28:43
Why have Mr. Robinson and Ms. Rose said they are in support of requiring students to use bathrooms, locker rooms and shower facilities that correspond with the sex assigned at birth not their gender identity? Doesn't this violate the Sarasota School Board's current policy of allowing students to use whichever bathroom matches their preferred gender identity?

As the Bblack community and allies have risen in the streets expressing a distrust of law enforcementthe American Police Force and calling attention to disparities in policing both inside and outside of schools, what will you do to address the fact that although only 8% of Sarasota’s students are Black, 37% of those arrested in our schools are Black?
Robin Williams
01:44:12
David and Tom for school board! We need people that are not buying their seats and turning these elections into 6 figure campaigns. That has been the case since Mr. Robinson and Ms Ziegler got on the Board and made these campaigns totally big money races.
Marla Steiner
01:45:05
Mr. Robinson, you are twisting Tom Edward's words. LiSTEN!

I worked with Citizens for Better Schools to pass the referendum in 2018. Eric would not work with us. He started his own PAC but not sure what he ever did to support the referendum.

Question for Eric Robinson: Is your response to shift away from a question about supporting the arts indicative of the way you shift away from actual support of the arts?
Sue Maloney

There needs to be a funding cap on the amount of money allowed to be spent on our School Board elections.

4. Should County schools protect the privacy rights of students to use the bathroom, locker room and shower facilities consistent with their biological sex, not their so-called “gender identity”?

Karen. Tell that to the kids you failed at Brookside when Russo was terrorizing them. You failed them, their families, and the entire community. Disgraceful. We’ll never know your side b/c you refused to participate in the investigation for a year. Innocent people don’t behave this way.

Why is Ms. Rose and Mr, Robinson misrepresenting their record for LGBTQ students? Didn't they tell the Christian Family Coalition Florida that they support their position that kids must use their birth assigned gender bathrooms, and locker rooms rather than their chosen gender?
Gretchen Lienhop

North Port doesn’t have internet service because Eric Robinson manages developer friendly PACs that prevent special interests from paying their fair share for infrastructure, like internet.

I am appalled at some of the comments in this chat tonight. We work to teach our students to speak kindly to others even when we disagree. I am saddened about the nasty behavior displayed.
