I second Dawn's question. We have a have a hard working Board, most of whom have little money to contribute and no fundraising experience.

Melanie Conner
46:44
I am grateful because I feel like I have a rock star board. My challenge is finding ways for me to engage with them individually between meetings and events. In trying to nurture and support the staff, donors, and the board....I am exhausted. I want to get better at including my board members in the community and simply engaging with them to get to know them better. #LongOverdueForAMassage #TryingToKeepAllBallsInTheAir

Randy Redner
50:32
Thanks Melanie Conner because the Board is your most important set of volunteers. You get what you invest in so if you don't invest in your Board members why would we expect they invest in our organization?
Sherwin Levinson
52:07
We've been VERY blessed by the pandemic. For the first time in 14 years, people understand what we do. It's also engaged our Board to a level beyond my wildest expectations. We now have a good shot at solid succession and financial sustainability.
Tim Turner SATISFEED

Dress for Success Atlanta
53:54
Yes, we had to restart our board basically...we had so many people had joined just to be on a board. We now have about 50% that are truly engaged....A few that still are not engaged at all.
Jorge Vallejo
54:05
Our board has a financial annual commitment which is a blessing as all board members are meeting the goal, either by their own treasure or their network or a mix of both. But I feel we are limited because of financial commitment amount. I have some incredible volunteers that I think would add a lot of value on a board setting, as their are connected to the mission, but they do not have the capacity currently financially. I am considering taking the financial goal out of the board and simply state that we ask that UPPER90 be on their top three organizations they support. That way, all are invested but it opens the door for more people with the heart and competencies to serve, to serve. Any thoughts on financial levels on a board?
Tim Turner SATISFEED
54:53
Recognizing BOD are volunteers is revelatory. DUH!!! I struggle with building relationship with my BOD and my volunteers. So hard!
Dress for Success Atlanta
55:51
That is great advice....Why do you serve?

Board member here -- I feel most invested when I am working on specific projects for the team. I would echo what some of the other people have said about the role of the CEO -- don't be afraid to ask your board to do real work. Don't just "report."

Do you have contacts with CBRE? I have worked through them to secure warehouse space for Children's Restoration Network from time to time when they've needed it. CBRE manages zillions of square feet of facilities and quite ofte they have facilities that are vacant and can offer them up. Might not be permanent but might give you a 3-6 month "home" to work with during this transition period.

I have to run off, now, but this has been a great meeting! Thank you to Randy and Cindy for this opportunity. If any of the CEOs would be interested in recruiting college faculty to serve on your boards, drop me a note with what kind of experience/expertise you would like, and I can try to give you some names of some of my colleagues that you could interview. We have a diverse faculty with lots of different experience (industrial, government, etc.) Charles Pibel -- cpibel@ggc.edu

Ask the question to each board member: What do you want to get from you board service? Their WHY, to ensure they are serving on their sweet spot
Karen Dessables, Reach for Excellence

Our focus will be on Strategic Board Recruitment, especially to diversify our board.
Laura Ballance - The Hudgens Center
02:21:37
We have been focused on the collective effort in building strategy from the Board, but I realize I need to commit to working more with individual Board members, one on one, to help strengthen our scoring in areas of Finding Your Focus and Training & Supports.
