Jeff you are breaking up, in and out.

17:25
can folks please mute so jeff is more audible?

17:29
the audio keeps cutting out. is anyone else experiencing this?

17:32
Your audio is REALLY choppy

17:34
^ yes

17:34
Your mic is cutting you out

17:35
yeah it's breaking up

17:36
Same here, cutting a bit

17:38
the audio is breaking up

17:38
it’s cutting out bad

17:40
yes audio is kind of choppy

17:43
Maybe people should turn off video

17:43
Sound is very static and coming in and out

17:45
same here

17:45
yes, audio is bad

17:48
same

17:50
everyone needs to mute their audio

17:50
Nancy (she/her) from Ypsilanti, MI

17:52
I think if more people shut off their video it will help

17:52
wired connections whenever possible

18:07
Jeff, I would call in..I think its your wifi

18:09
If audio is spotty, try using the call in from your phone. It’s usually due to internet connection

18:10
it might just be our internet is being a little overwhelmed with so many on the call

18:13
You can also turn off your video to save bandwidth and your audio should be better

18:13
would shutting off video help?

18:17
Yes, people cutting off their video will help!!!

18:18
I think it's your internet Jeff

18:21
It might be because of the max amount of participants

18:21
Apsaalooke , Niitsitapi, Stelio, Qaeisp’e Common Hunting Ground (SW Montana)

18:22
Yes shutting off video would help

18:22
Yeah it seems like it’s the internet connection

18:24
if people turn off videos it often helps

18:25
Turning off my video to see if that helps.

18:26
It’s probably a bandwidth issue

18:29
If everyone stops their videos it will help

18:30
I've been told if we do not use video, it would be clearer

18:31
If folks turn off video, that will help

18:35
you sound clear now

18:38
that sounds clear

18:43
Maybe other callers can turn off their video

18:45
Turn off video, ya'll

18:49
Much clearer now that folks are turning off video <3

18:51

28:07
Thank you for everything you’re doing! You all are amazing!

28:09
I am interested in learning how to divest funds from the (local San Francisco) police budget to community based care. What does this look like in practice, and who is leading this action.

29:02
Might folks consider clicking "participants --> [your name] --> rename" and adding where you're from so we can link up? I'm from DC (Piscataway / Nacosta land)

29:11
^^ I’d love to talk/learn more about that as well Cori

29:12
I know Black Visions in MN has defunding police on their list of demands. I’m not sure what practice look like...

Anchorage, AK had a great peaceful protest yesterday.

31:00
Good enough for now - safe enough to try

31:08
Is there a suggested number of folks max for those sort of actions-due to COVID?

31:17
how do i know if there is a chapter of SURJ in my town already and if not, how can i start one?

In Long Beach, a coalition of progressive community groups does an annual People’s State of the City and a People’s budget. The budget moves funds from police to the broader prevention and social service budget. We’ve had some success—not nearly enough.

32:01
At the protest I attended, they used tape on the ground to mark social distance areas to stand.

32:04
There is a SURJ chapter in Sacramento that meets at UUSS.

32:06
Hello from LA

32:08
Please let people know there’s a SURJ in Santa Cruz County. We’re still not on the map

32:11
Yes, thanks Moriah!

32:21
anyone in Oakland going to a police station this afternoon?

32:25
Thanks Susan!

32:27
I’m pretty sure I saw Antifas as well

Is there a SURJ Houston? Would like to get more involved.

If anyone here is in Richmond, VA please let me know of any events!

33:50
I would love to connect to people in Manhattan, let me know if you know of a protest today!

33:50
What does police defunding do? couldn't that be dangerous? what if someone is in a situation where they really need police intervention?

33:58
Thank you. I'm looking to get connected to a local chapter.

34:24
It is about shifting funding to g=community needs like housing, mental health, childcare—that is what creates safer communities for everyone

34:25
Anyone in Bergen County, NJ - please let me know.

34:33
I am located in the Southern California desert area and was looking for a local chapter.

34:35
can we volunteer our skills for this effort as well? I’ve got a background in marketing and social media so I’d love to put those to work for you.

34:37
@Shannon check this out for some answers: This is what police abolition looks like. #TheEndofPolicing https://t.co/EtmgBa1mQ7

Any Canadians in the group?

35:28
In NYC most of the people getting arrested yesterday just got desk tickets, didn't need to post bail

35:35
@Shannon - great question. I encourage you to look up your local budget and compare how much money the police budget is vs for other community needs. Where I live, the police budget is the majority of the budget, yet the council is cutting from essential basic needs during this economic crisis.

35:38
Looking to organize in Toronto/GTA in Canada

35:55
can you send in a link for a recording of this if we have to sign off?

36:01
How does defunding police reduce police behaving badly.? What about prosecutors that don't indict or juries that don't convict?

36:15
how to organize if you are new to your city? i am a college student home due to COVID 19

36:20
Anyone in Oakland/Area interested in going to a police station with End White Violence signs?

36:21
Beautiful share about what you did! That’s incredible.

36:28
@Isabel look for a local chapter

36:43
A link with the recording will be sent out afterwards to all who registered.

36:45
I’d love to educate myself more on how to be most effective on the ground during protest. I was out on the streets in LA yesterday and felt fairly confident in my awareness, but I want to make sure I’m amplifying and keeping others safe as best as I can. If there’s a set of resources around this I’d love to get my hands on it.

36:52
Megan, I can connect with you for SURJ Bay Area actions.

37:02
Physically being somewhere isn’t super possible for me with two immunocompromised people at home, so I am really interested in how we can help. Thanks for pulling this together

37:03
Hi Rachel! C. let’s connect!susankohen20@gmail.com

37:12
did you need to get a permit for your march?

37:18
Wondering about practical ways to determine if a social media organized protest is “legitimate,” so to speak. I’ve heard of baiting from outside groups and protests that have not gone through the necessary legal loopholes.

37:22
#endwhitesilence

37:32
Hi Jennifer, could you connect me with SURJ Bay Area as well?

37:33
@JenniferTilson- I would love to be connected with any Bay Area, specifically San Jose area actions

37:33
Interested in connecting with the SURJ Los Angeles chapter! hrrywstn2@gmail.com

37:34
yes thank you, Lauren! I am trying to get connected to Columbus chapter however I think organizing in the city vs the suburbs will look differently. definitely will be trying to meet folks to link up with

37:46
Jennifer tilson, me too pls re: Bay Area!

37:49
Awesome!!

37:54
what are the thoughts of doing it away from police headquarters. Our city lies on a busy thoroughfare, but the police HQ and city hall are off the main drag, tucked back on small side streets.

38:05
Me too Jennifer Tilson! I’m in the South Bay

38:19
Thank you, Emma

38:25
Do you have thoughts about small groups protesting and holding signs in small towns, vs showing up to larger events at nearby towns and cities?

38:33
Hi Carly, I'll message you!

38:38
Here is a great resource from Ruckus Society to support thinking through roles at an action. https://ruckus.org/know-your-role/

38:58
best way to find local events happening so we can jump in? totally newbie here.

39:00
looking to connect with others in the Charlotte or greater NC area

39:01
There is no affiliate chapter in Bergen County, NJ and I need help setting up an action - when is it ok to use the SURJ name if I'm doing it on my own?

39:18
I would love to know more about organizing events in rural areas.

39:21
ditto Jennifer Tilson! also in South Bay and immunocompromised

39:45
Police violence is enabled and escalated by bloated budgets that enable over-policing of black, brown and indigenous communities and the militarization of the police.

39:51
Anyone in the Bay Area, please check out our local SURJ chapter here: https://www.surjbayarea.org/

39:52
I’d love to be involved in a smaller call where we can do break out sessions.

40:05
can you please speak on the importance of white folks educating themselves

40:17
do we need to gain permission from SURJ to add to our signage?

40:24
we are trying to do some smaller calls too

40:27
Im interested in organizing standing/regular phone banking and ensuring that this carries on beyond this most recent news. are there any efforts to organize something like that already in existence?

40:33
I have done work through my employer with our local police departments benevolent fund that helps police officers when they are sick or injured. they also do a lot of donating and sponsoring of local events. would it be beneficial to reach out to them to see if we could get a discussion going with them to creating a working relationship to help them understand what they can do to prevent these awful policing activities? I don’t want to uphold their systems, so I don’t know if that would help uphold their systems or if it could help.

40:36
In my experience not every body is the kind of body that can physically be in the streets. What’s a good strong disability justice lens that talks about things people who can’t be in the streets can do?

40:43
I organize meetings and actions in western suburbs of Massachusetts with Boston Knapsack Anti-Racism Group: https://www.meetup.com/Antiracists We will be doing visible actions…you can join us remotely for ideas… and for actions locally if you are in MA

40:49
anyone in Long Island, Ny?

41:02
Rebecca Great quesiton! YES. I think the small town and rural visibility gatherings are so impactful!

41:24
is there at date and time that we can take this action all at the same time? or goal is to all schedule and plan independently?

41:26
Thank you Carla - Thank you Deb

41:30
question: HOW to divest police funds to community based care

41:38

Thank you Victoria, that is super helpful as someone with Lupus and a toddler who both want to help!

Check out #DisabledPeopleForBlackLives on twitter! Lots of ideas and conversations.

anyone here from Nebraska?

43:46
Seattle folks - there will be a vigil today at 3PM in Columbia City at the corner of Alaska & Rainier

44:01
anyone organizing a car caravan in the san fernando valley or los angeles? I am self-quarantining right now due to work

44:12
What does police defunding do?

44:12
I have great planning skills, but I have such a quiet voice & I cannot lead chants (my howl is pathetic). Do we need to be vocally disruptive outside of a police dept/city hall? Is holding a sign disruptive enough?

44:17
Is someone harnessing all of the ideas in the chat to share later?

44:22
Sarah, how do you do that without getting arrested or somethin

44:25
BROOKLYN FOLKS? Any actions on tap for today? Please share!

44:42
Shannon, you have to keep moving. Learned in Redwood City Cali

44:44
From Michigan, if you are going to stop traffic, just be aware that the right-wing did this in Lansing and blocked ambulance and others from reaching the hospital. So just be aware of what you are doing. On the other hand Ann Arbor shut down the highway and it was effective and peaceful. Pick the roads for statement but know that we aren't making healthcare crisis worse.

44:50
if you clicck on the three dots by "everyone" it will save the chat

44:57
Re: disability & protest, this is a good resource as well: https://twitter.com/ejeris/status/1266128777643470855?s=20

45:15
I don’t feel ready to organize but want to participate. Will we all be connected to folks in similar areas from this call?

45:17
Thanks Priscilla!

45:23
Do y’all think that having a household-sized protest is useful? I’ve been brainstorming ways I can get my roommates (who are being super super COVID-safe) to make signs and stand out in public as long as it was just our household— we could walk to a highly trafficked intersection here in Los Angeles? And do that as a daily ritual? Trying to find ways to engage people who have varying levels of comfort

45:29
Definitely interested to hear more about the permitting issue

45:32
I couldn't get in earlier because it was the meeting was at capacity. Will we get a recording of this?

45:34
Anyone in the East Bay know if the Oakland caravan at 2 today has a zoom call associated?

45:43
In Burlington yesterday we had an incredible event, with 1,500-2,000 people showing up in person (as well as a few hundred cars of people). We had a few specific teams of volunteers - traffic control, police liaison, medics and de-escalation (who also passed out masks and emphasized 6' distancing at all times). There were a few things that were incredible about the event, including the emphasis on elevating and prioritizing black voices - which felt particularly important in Vermont where the population is almost entirely white. Article linked here - https://vtdigger.org/2020/05/30/hundreds-protest-in-burlington-and-montpelier-after-death-of-george-floyd/

46:08
Richmond or San Pablo CA actions?

46:29
George Floyd's body is being flown back to Houston for burial soon. Is there anything in the works in here in Houston we can take part in?

46:40
happy to start an Los Angeles caravan, but if there’s anyone that’s already begun that process and needs support I’d love to be a part.

46:50
Thanks for the tip @Priscilla! Never knew about clicking the 3 dots in the reply box to Save Chat!

46:55
Better to demonstrate in very white small town or neighboring small town with significant black population?

47:08
San Francisco Bay Area events: https://www.actiontogetherbayarea.org/calendar

47:12
@sally can u march from one to the other?

47:31
Is it impactful to have multiple shorter protests at a police dept/city hall like every night this week for an hour?

47:51
is there an active communication thread LA folks can join (like via WP4BL)? I’d love to be a part of the evolving/planning

49:20
There are usually organizers that might make an announcement. But also keep your eyes open, are the Black leaders who started the action no longer around

49:21
I'm not fond of the hashtag (white silence can often be an improvement). Is there any reason for me not to bring a different sign (like #endwhiteconsent)?

49:40
For shirts: https://wearoutthesilence.org/

49:44
Is the WP4BL newsletter the best way to hear about actions in LA?

49:46
Also in LA. I’d like to head down to city hall around noon with a sign. Hoping it is safe/lawful to do that today.

49:47
LA folks who want to connect with me can text/call me directly. I’m linked to Bend The Arc and have been participating in JusticeLA textbanks primarily. 3108804665

I don’t have a local chapter (Metro North of Boston) but I have signed up for the new chapter orientation call this Thursday

50:28
Thanks Stef

50:29
Hooray ST LOUIS!!

50:33
Thanks Stef!!

50:56
Ending white silence is about white people speaking up, especially to other white people and saying white supremacy is a problem. It is about interrupting the narrative that white folks are accepting the status quote of white supremacy

51:12
Is here anything that kids can do to help? I'm 12

51:14
Thank you Stef! Will be texting later today

51:15
Does anyone know of a resource/database where we can find protests, marches, vigils etc. near us?

51:27
Anyone going to protest in San Diego today?

52:39
On signage we recommend End White Silence, Black Lives Matter, and the Justice4…but inpartiulcar, to get other white folks to consider taking action, the End White Silence. You do not have to run your signs by SURJ, but if you have questions, they are welcome

52:45

52:48
YES! SURJ Youth and Families Bay Area is working on something similar for kids - let's collaborate!

53:01

53:42
Resources and curriculum for kids will be great to share

53:48
How are people responding to people freaking out about the violence in the cities now ?

53:50
whats a good thing to chant while protesting?

53:53
3 spaces now. That person can come in and join us

53:55
I run an organization in the substance use/mental health space. I need to target specific action steps. Any resources would be helpful.

53:56
Maryland area folks near Anne Arundel county can find us on FB @SURJannapolis and email surjannapolis@gmail.com

53:58
Michael - need access.

54:13
what about the neo Nazis invasion during protests? we need to be able to identify those people.

54:16
“I Can’t Breathe” is a trending chant (I’ve heard)

54:20
Catskills folks: find organizers of Forward Friday’s (formerly Faso Friday’s) and in Delhi NY Get Woke Film Series and FairForAll campaign

54:25
Danville Kentucky is also doing one this week!

54:26
We’d love to connect about resources for children and families! stlantiracismcollective@gmail.com is our email!

55:16
I’ll be organizing for San Francisco, Oakland, Marin areas. If you’re interested in joining our group please email me at danielle.r.dupre@gmail.com

55:22
I was going to ask about post offices. My village is so small we don’t have a police department

55:26

56:08
I'm happy to drop if this will help get one of the speakers in. I'm not currently organizing, just came on to be informed and better prepared to participate

56:13
folx north of NYC, if you message me your email I can start a thread!

56:44
Thanks, Ariel

57:02
I can drop if we need to get a speaker in. - Happy to catch up on email later. Thank you all.

57:08
what does ending police funding really mean?

57:09
Thanks so much for the attention to rural communities

57:16
links to culturally responsive resources for kids?

57:47
even if we live in an urban area but just want to show up when we have a free hour to demonstrate

57:57
I’m representing a group of special group teachers. We live in predominantly white area. How can we best support our students of color ?

58:02
I can drop as well since we can get a recording of this.

58:06
sorry, is what I just said ok?

58:12
http://bit.ly/ANTIRACISMRESOURCES

58:26
How am I supposed to know when to listen to community organizers that exist, versus organizing myself?

58:27
If you do not block the sidewalk or streets, or use electric outlet, you usually do not need a permit. AND, you can take action and if police ask you to leave, you can do so if that feels right to you

58:51
@theconsciouskid nonprofit org Parenting and Education through a Critical Race Lens

59:01
Nancy Sampson, yes, that’s great!

59:04
thank you emma!!!

59:08
BE AWARE that in KCMO I have seen push back from People of Color PoC that contacting the police about protesting them is counterproductive.

59:10
Go Emma!

59:12
great tip about getting to know people through actionsi

59:19
Our LB approach to ending police funding is moving money to service, not police. Currently the general fund is close to 50% for police (a bit under) and that’s not unusual.

59:28
thanks!

59:29
Thanks Val!

59:30
If you offer an action that is different than what organizers are planning you can do it yourself. Also great to keep growing action communities in each area

59:31
wonderful advice

59:39
What is an effective way to collect contact information from the people that attend so you can follow up?

59:45
Lots of great questions regarding decreasing police funding! Beyond this moment of action, SURJ will be creating some opportunities to learn more about that. In the meantime, check out https://m4bl.org/covid-19-platform/

01:00:00
If I protest outside my local police headquarters, are there any specific demands I should have in mind? If I have the opportunity to demand an end to white silence, what would that look like for my local police department?

01:00:05
Parents/people who work with kids: this article has great framing and a list of wonderful resources. https://strivingparent.com/2020/05/29/the-top-5-reasons-well-meaning-white-parents-do-not-discuss-race-with-their-white-children/?fbclid=IwAR0RIdawlu0uT_jC9_SDwYkMncfjpo2SImbBSVHgDQOUmYnqfi8H9RsMPS4

01:00:16
resistance is not something you ask permission for

01:00:31
Yes! Who can I ask about bail? I would like to be on front lines if I'm able

01:00:39
Thank you @Jennifer for the parent resource

01:00:40
@Gillian - yes collect contact info! You can use google form sign ups and collect people’s emails and phone numbers so you can call them after the action and bring people back together for long haul work

01:00:43
Thanks Jennifer T!

01:00:50
Is there an upcoming White People for Black Lives End White Silence action planned in Los Angeles? There are no upcoming events on their Facebook page and I don’t want to plan my own action if it would be more effective to join one that’s already in the works.

01:00:50
anyone from philly?

01:01:10
any protests going on in dc this week?

01:01:10
disrupting requires being uncomfortable

01:01:13
should i favor public visibility over being at the police station? showing up at the corner of the city hall instead?

01:01:27
Can someone please include a list of the best local/national organizations to donate to if we are unable to attend a protest? I also like the idea of car caravans. Sorry if you already covered this! P.S. I am in San Diego.

01:02:02
What if your local police department is sympathetic, has made public statements in support of the anti-racist actions and have not had any reports of racist actions? How do we enjoin them instead of protest them?

01:02:15
^^^^

01:02:18
Isabela Piedrahita: I would prioritize visibility, is my personal take. (But I’m new at this)

01:02:44
I had that question too N G

01:02:45
In a town where demonstrating outside police headquarters with signs is low risk for white folks, what are good ways to heighten the energy?

01:02:47
Are there non-violent direct action trainings online?

01:02:49
@Whitney some good ones to consider: Black Vision Collective, ColorofChage.org, NAACP, Reclaim The Block, Minnesota Freedom Fund

01:03:15
Tremendous Jess! Powerful story!

01:03:39
If you are joining larger actions or are worried about arrest - see if there is a Bail Fund set up already, donate to that to support getting people out of jail. Look for people wearing “National Lawyers Guild” hats at large urban actions and ask for the Jail Support phone number, ask local organizers for the jail support phone number & write that number on your body with a sharpie. If you get arrested in a mass arrest situation, you can call jail support to get out.

01:03:39
To the q above about demanding an end to white silence for the police: We sent a letter to the editor of our local paper addressed to the PD asking them to publicly denounce George Floyd’s murder. We’re in a 90% white suburb of Boston.

01:03:51
yes that’s what I’m thinking michele thanks

01:03:57
Jessica (she/her) Santa Rosa, CA

01:04:06
anyone have experience with repercussions for visible activism because they work for a state agency? willing to take the risk, just curious if anyone has input.

01:04:08
Anyone in Chicago, esp. North Side?

01:04:14
Thank you for the responses! I have seen lots of posts about places to donate. I want to think carefully about where the funds would be most effective.

01:04:22
Good list of resources for us white ppl: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BRlF2_zhNe86SGgHa6-VlBO-QgirITwCTugSfKie5Fs/mobilebasic

01:05:27

01:05:28

01:05:31

01:05:33
Josh, I’ve heard it might not be BLM organized but I’m not sure.

01:05:37
amazing Jess, thank you!

01:05:40
Thanks Jess!

01:05:47

01:05:48
what are the best ways to be aware of the protests and demonstrations in your area?

01:05:57
Thank you Jess!!

01:06:35
also to make sure to donate to trusted orgs/campaigns - beware of impostors

01:06:39

01:07:30
May we use the SURJ name in organizing, to aid in the legitimacy of action?

01:08:15
thanks berkley

01:08:19
would be curious to know as we head into the work week if there are any tools for contributing to the work at our places of employment as another visible space within the public sphere where we collectively hold power, privilege and influence?

01:08:21
Rural, red state (WV) and I think people who would be sympathetic to anti-racism message would be very offended by anti-police message. How to thread that needle?

01:08:27
Encouraged and inspired

01:08:27
Energized!!

01:08:34

01:09:14
Feeling grateful, scared, hopeful, ok with being imperfect

01:09:14
I live in a town with a shop that sells confederate memorabilia. I suddenly understnd that something should be one about bringing people together to stand up against that diisie thing in our town.

01:09:17
the media makes it look scary to get out on the streets, but for me personally just seems like there’s no choice but to get out there.

01:09:18
I would love to hear more specifics about defunding efforts on future calls

01:09:18
Ready to stay out and stay visible and looking into how these systems are most impacting my community and finding ways to place pressure on those in power

01:09:19

01:09:37

Great job SURJ

01:10:28
Went to a Black-organized protest in Middletown CT. The organizers worked with local police who have a reputation among Black folks as “not bad”. Police stopped traffic and participated. The one agitated person was a young white woman. Someone called her out but unsuccessfully; she left yelling

01:10:30
Feeling grateful for this community of action! Thank you!

01:10:31
San Francisco city hall tomorrow at 11am -kneel for justice!

01:10:31

01:10:37
I’ve got a group starting to work thru Me and White Supremacy, am looking into what I can do outside of the streets and am feeling the power of community and SO appreciate you making space for the reality that it’s going to be messy and imperfect and exactly what is needed

01:10:40
I'm in NYC!! Manhattan. Are there any protests planned today?

01:12:49
What kind of support/work does SURJ need as your organization scales up? Obviously doing the action, but also organizationally?

01:12:54
