Who can see your viewing activity?
Good morning from Orange County, Ca everybody. So appreciative of this webinar. Thank you!
Hello to everyone. Pamela Dake with OP Cre8tor. So glad to be here and learn some pertinent info....
Let's get a generation check. Type B for Boomers, X for X-Gen and M for Millenials
Thanks for the recording...
Hi! I am a Boomer. Recently laid off due to economic reasons.
Gen X here - hello from Massachusetts
No worries, I feel as though I've worked hard to have the honor of "older" included with my name....
Young baby boomer here from Chicago
Gen X from NYC
Hi everyone from Los Angeles..........
Gen-X from freelance in Mexico (sorry if it repeats, updated my settings)
Todd helped me craft my first resume :)))
X in LA
Great insight on salary ranges. I get asked about salary expectations... I am open to a lower salary and tough to state any expectations!
freelance rates in NYC for technical designers has definitely dropped in the last 15yrs
Agreed on freelance rates being low already before all this happened.
as a merchandiser I’ve seen merch positions being combined with planning and or sales
I’m personally tired of looking at a screen and want that tactile visual experience
It's very difficult, if impossible to replace the human contact factor....
As a Senior Designer, my level has dried up. I am looking at Designer positions with the same qualifications I have. How can I adjust my resume so that companies will look at me? Willing to take a pay cut.
+1 for Dawn's question above.
same to above, I applied for a job which reported to someone that used to work in my Dept at a lower level then me. they won’t contact me, I have too much experience
Can you help to advise what these new resume layouts are?
You can definitely take dates off your resume, but they can see you are older when you show up. A lot of what an older person comes up against is company culture. They feel uncomfortable with an older employee if you are over 50.
take dates off of employment, too? or just schooling?
I took off just my school dates. Rule of thumb for employment dates is not to go back more than 20 years--some even say 15.
The issue is also that so many of the accounts no longer exist so even if I did $50 million w/ 3 accounts and built a successful biz, if those accounts are all gone, whats my selling point?
What about those who do not have experience of working at well known companies? I feel that candidates from well known companies bring much more attentions than those who don't. But I don't believe that necessarily means they have better skillset
Good question Aaron....
not including old experiences might lead to question about gap in the career? Thanks
completely agree with Todd. I stayed 8 years with one company, 14 years with other company.
Most younger employees do not stay for many years. That is now standard to just have 2 years at a position. Plus you will never move up in most companies - you need to leave to make more money and get a higher position. No employers have any loyalty for you to stay.
Can we have all panelists contact info?
agreed with Ellen!
Agree with Ellen.
Job hopping points well taken, but what if you've been unfortunate in working for some brands that shutter soon after you arrive???
yes to Ellen!
Agree with Ellen. Lots of companies don't reward loyalty/longevity, so people don't stay as long
I’m not a job hopper, but I’ve had 5 jobs in the last 4 years. NYC has been rough on the apparel industry. is this problematic for employers? previously I was at 2 well known companies for 17 years
Contact info for the panelists...
Agreed, do you list jobs that shuttered on you less than a year after you were hired (3 months in my case)? or does it look like a gap in your employment?
How difficult is it to change industries?
I've taken several jobs in the last ten years where I've had every intention of these being long-term roles, only to have the rug pulled out from under me for reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with my performance.
So while I truly respect Todd's wisdom and expertise, I'm so saddened to hear he might dismiss my resume.
I asked earlier about 3d garment fitting any info on that?
How do you tailor your resume to a specific position when you are applying for several postings? You need to update Linked in as well. If the job titles are different is that an issue?
Very good points Todd!
Audrey that is big now-#D tech too.
3D is big now agree
how to get 3D experience?
Are you seeing companies looking for designers with current technology 3D modeling software ie CLO3d skills/experience?
I'm using this time in between jobs to learn new programs including SketchUp
Browzwear has an open Indie program
For 3D rendering
Yes and Bowzwear
There are several 3D softwares: Clo 3D, Browzwear, Optitex
Clo 3 D has classes on youtube, check them out
