What has been your experience?
Ashley Maher-Widen
57:04
Practical question - what is the best way to gather comps when looking at job opportunities?
Rosalyn Brown
57:28
the data isn’t surprising but encountering companies that value diversity is lacking
Courtenay Shipley
57:48
I wonder if those that moved into advisor roles where they have control over their compensation impacts the numbers in addition to the survivorship bias Daniella mentioned
Mickie Murphy
58:14
I've always asked for the compensation that I thought was fair. In the TPA industry, there is no data to look at compensation comparison. I have never felt that I made less than my male peers.
Jennifer Sahady
59:14
Male collegues have told me the pay gap after they left the company to help me.
Marcia Mantell
59:17
Speaking as a Boomer, our journey was still quite new in the industry. We might be happier b/c we were grateful to even get new opportunities and advancement. It generally took a man with courage who was willing to give up some political capital to offer a woman the opportunity to advance. For many of us, the title was the priority -- not a big paycheck. Plus, we had no way to see the salary ranges.
Jennifer Bourret
59:23
I reached out to two WiPN members during 2020 to get research for a new job negotiation.
Jennifer Sahady
01:00:11
Thank you for sharing Marcia.
Ashley Maher-Widen
01:01:06
Comment - I've found one struggle within the industry is regulations with security licenses. I'm told I can not have individual info, job descriptions, etc on LinkedIn due to our compliance regulations. Super frustrating when this is a great way to network/gain visibility especially as women who may not be "On the Golf course"
Veena Tiruvallur
01:02:26
can you speak to the role of a mentor vs sponsor? Nile mentor is.
Veena Tiruvallur
01:03:05
sorry hit send too soon. while mentor is key, how would a sponsor play in our growth? any insights?
Theresa Conti
01:04:23
Is it the right thing for us to job hop? It that the best thing for our industry?
Courtenay Shipley
01:04:29
Job hopping to an extent is necessary to broaden skills and obtain new opportunities and perspectives.
Jennifer Sahady
01:04:32
I think people prefer not to job hop, but it is a common and quick path to move up.
Heidi Lapham
01:04:44
I think staying too long can be something that holds you back too so moving is good but has you be balanced by not doing it too much/often
Birgit Cornelius
01:04:56
Job hopping may benefit the pay but it also benefits the employers. It creates more well-rounded staff who are able to adjust to different environments or may be more open to change as a result of it.
Saodat Bazarova
01:05:03
I think job-hopping is ok if you are still trying to figure out the trajectory of your career. But then again, you may not want to hop around if you have a great mentor.
Carrie Ohm
01:05:06
Loyalty should be rewarded.
Mickie Murphy
01:05:11
I think that both men and women have found that we have to move jobs to get a raise, usually because we hit the ceiling in a compensation range or limited by opportunity. I have changed job for change of responsibility and pay.
Courtenay Shipley
01:05:25
We may not like job hopping but it requires us as managers to be even more engaged with developing talent.
Jennifer Bourret
01:05:52
I think it also depends on how much opportunity the company has generally. It might be more difficult to find opportunities at smaller companies.
Andrea Donaldson
01:06:56
I think you have to look at the philosophy of the firm and if it meets your philosophies. If there is a disconnect there then job hopping would be a consideration to achieve what you deserve.
Jennifer Sahady
01:09:03
Anyone who can pull of success at work and home is a hero!
Katherine Tipper
01:09:08
There is a generational difference in work life balance meaning my newest youngest hires want this both male and female
Theresa Conti
01:09:48
No problem! We see it either way
Mickie Murphy
01:10:07
Agree 100% on the generational difference.
Theresa Conti
01:11:41
What other things could employers do to help us achieve work/life balance?
Heidi Lapham
01:11:48
stop praise for people that don’t have work life balance
Lorna Reardon
01:13:05
They have to establish a baseline and continuous message of Respect and Trust
Mickie Murphy
01:13:22
As managers we have to stop modeling that and insisting that our employees take their time and make their families and themselves the priority.
Rita Riccardi
01:13:56
We tend to juggle so many things. Everything is not equally important so need to do fewer things and do them well
Andrea Donaldson
01:14:14
Sometimes I feel I am fighting with my own internal guilt even when work life balance is 100% supported by my firm.
Jennifer Sahady
01:14:29
I completely agree Andrea.
karyn dzurisin
01:14:34
So true Andrea!
Jennifer Sahady
01:15:00
I wonder how managers could help mitgate that feeling.
Andrea Donaldson
01:15:17
our firm is the same!!
Jennifer Sahady
01:15:57
I appreciate that Cindy! When is the day done?
Jennifer Sahady
01:16:32
I've found that with unlimited time off - I took less vacation and felt greater guilt around taking time off.
Saodat Bazarova
01:16:45
Is the idea of unlimited vacation is to minimize the company liability on the financial statements?
Jennifer Sahady
01:17:09
I think so Saodat
Rosalyn Brown
01:17:32
Jennifer I found with unlimited I was discouraged from taking time off as well
Heidi Lapham
01:17:51
no
Theresa Conti
01:17:55
Is education the first thing you thing of to advance your career?
Lorna Reardon
01:18:07
absolutely not.
Pam Brooks
01:18:29
No. Relationships have helped drive my career.
Allie Shafer
01:18:34
Just moved to unlimited PTO this year...I'm not optimistic. Also, this means that excess PTO days won't be paid in the event of a downsizing.
Jennifer Bourret
01:18:48
My CFA designation has opened a lot of doors for me.
Saodat Bazarova
01:18:58
Licensing is a door-opener too
Marcia Mantell
01:19:02
No. It was learning to read the legalese that is our retirement industry.
Birgit Cornelius
01:19:03
I look for education when hiring but I'm not sure it helps as much as you progress.
Denise Penn
01:19:17
no, not formal education. Should be more about experience, influence, participation. Designations/licensing helps some
Jillian White
01:19:41
I acquired a post-secondary degree to prevent possibility of being excluded for promotion - however, it's been my experience & relationships that truly propelled my career
Lisa Smith
01:19:54
advocacy is critical to career advancement
Lindsey Phillips
01:19:57
No, my driver is my work ethic and bringing my best to my career
Jennifer Sahady
01:20:14
I have found an amazing mentor through WiPN - thank you for that connection!
Lauren McCarty
01:20:16
you have to have the credentials to pass the HR screen, but relationships/mentors/sponsors as well as reputation (for hard work and success in previous roles) is what drives growht
Birgit Cornelius
01:21:27
Great session today - looking forward to hearing more!
Jennifer Sahady
01:24:47
The one on one networking is great!
