Interesting. I had not heard this about Jesse Helms. I am not surprised.

That is a lesson that White people are still trying to learn about solidarity with BIPOC racial justice efforts.
Thomas Healy
54:15
Agreed Pamela.

The closing of the health center in Soul City was a true loss for the county. It served so many patients of all races.

Fascinating to wonder what Warren County would be like had Soul City taken root.

Angela: What a shame that the experiment ultimately did not last. Soul City is a beautiful name1

This is fascinating history!

Jesse Helms mission was misguided. So sad that some elected officials focus more on themselves instead of those who they are elected to serve.

As a clueless transplant, what, if anything is on this land now? When project abandoned, was it sold?
Pamela Y Cook (she/her)
01:08:35
I was very proud to see Soul City every time I rode by it on I-85. I still have a small bottle of dirt from the Soul City ground breaking.

Write the book, Cousin Floyd!

The current residents of the area are still hopeful that the area will be developed.

Didn't Nixon perfect the Southern Strategy? Am I wrong about this?
Angela Jeannet
01:18:34
A correctional institution? Was that decision a repudiation of Black emergence?
David Beck
01:19:15
Y'all really think Nixon might've done the right thing? He invented the Southern Strategy. He was 100% political and would throw anyone under the bus at any point.
Lynn Bonner

The editorials suggesting that Floyd Sr. was getting rich from SC when the opposite was happening.

Claude Sutton had blind spots when it came to Jews.

Sadly, the reporting from major newspapers was not objective or comprehensive at that time. The Carolina Times was more widely read in the Black community at that time, particularly in Durham, NC. Unfortunately, that great newspaper is no longer published.
Thomas Healy
01:25:03
Nixon did launch the southern strategy, and I agree that he would have thrown Soul City under the bus if he found it politically expedient.
Thomas Healy
01:26:09
The Carolina Times and the Carolinian both stepped up to defend Soul City when it was attacked by the N&O. So did the Warren Record.
Katherine Hirscher
01:29:45
We see these issues today in many news outlets not to mention the horrendous disinformation on social media too.
David Beck
01:29:48
How close is Soul City to where the PCB scandal was? (WaPo ran great piece on that work as the birth of enviro justice). 2 huge events very close together.
David Beck
01:31:14
Right - he invented the term Env. Racism/Env. Justice
