I think Kathleen is referring to Ronnie Perelis who spoke yesterday about Carvajal.

58:03
Wonderful list of resources, Kathleen! Will you be making that list available to everyone?

58:21
I hope so!

58:39
Is the Robles book available in English translation?

59:23
I don’t think so, but check his Wiki.

01:01:40
Question: As a writer of CJ literature, how do you balance authenticity within the framework of historical and cultural context?

01:02:57
I Loved this book Corinne!

01:04:18
Thanks, Isabelle, for that very important question! Are there responsibilities that go along with one’s choice as an author to utilize the story of crypto-Jews for the next novel?

01:06:27
The current HaLapid has a review of my book, Spirits of the Ordinary, by Seth Ward

01:06:42
Isabelle and Dolly, that’s the key. Responsibility in my view is to do rigorous research and then write a magnetic and intriguing book. Historical fiction fills the interstices in history, where human emotion and experience exists. So much to say on the subject.

01:08:08
Much!

01:08:48
As a former editor of HaLapid, congratulations to Corinne for her extraordinary leadership and develop of HaLapid both in content and design.

01:10:30
And this leads us into the sister of authenticity: appropriation: who can do this and are there responsibilities that go along with it?

01:11:07
Great point, Dolores — thanks for raising it

01:13:28
That’s what I was starting to address (who can tell this story?) I think it goes through phases. And we may “own” the story (Do we do a DNA test on each author?) the depth of research, the truth and clarity of the story, give us the “right” to tell the story IMHO.

01:16:44
When I introduced the topic of C-J fiction in 1910 at our San Antonio Conference it was because of my original reaction of outrage at the flood of historical fiction on C-J without responsibility or quality

01:17:11
Dolly, exactly. There

01:17:18
New book of Mexican CryptoJewish poetry and prayers from the Carvajal clan extracted from the original Inquisition trial transcripts and presented with English translation.https://www.amazon.com/Anthology-Religious-Inquisition-16th-Century-CryptoJews/dp/B08RR7G875Free eBook for anyone at this session by email mark.schneegurt@wichita.edu

01:18:07
There’s a lot of weak bad stuff out there. It’s our responsibility to get it right, get it accessible. Beyond the academic world, we need to reach the readers out there.

01:19:25
I would like to ask about particular challenges with the archives in Spain. Is it difficult to get access-like the Vatican archives for example? What about linguistic challenges?

01:19:52
Oh. That’s wonderful! I was just going to ask if that’s available so when it is how w to get it thank you all so much for today’s presentations, so genuine

01:20:37
What a rich panel!

01:22:27
Thank you.

01:23:20
Yes, thank you. I need to read your new book, Kathleen.

01:23:22
Excellent presentations everyone! Mersi muncho, Ron Duncan Hart, Claudia Long, Kathleen Alcala, Corinne Joy Brown, and Doreen Carvajal!

01:24:33
Kathleen had a role in inspiring academia to begin digging more into our subject: See Dalia Kandiyoti, The Converso’s Return; and Sephardism, edited by Yael Halevi-Wise with a chapter by Dalia.

01:24:45
Thank you for sharing your personal stories and your publications.

01:25:49
My article on music among Crypto-Jews isn’t easily available online; write to me if you are interested in a pdf. judithcq@gmail.com

01:26:10
A shout out to Art Benveiste for Ha Lapid’s beginnings!

01:26:32
Agreed! Bravo Art!

01:27:06
And Art, who was my introduction into SCJS in 1998

01:27:09
Ron’s daughter Vanessa Paloma is an expert on the Jewish music legacy in Morocco.

01:27:22
In Iran there were the Jews of Mashad, not far from Afghanistan

01:27:25
Wonderful session. Thanks to all.

01:27:43
For the panel: Is there a group of “mentors” from SCJS who can provide guidance to those of us who would like to write our story, but haven’t for various reasons.

01:29:01
Yes, re Kathleen’s comment - Vanessa Paloma Elbaz is a treasured friend and colleague!

01:29:12
That Ron gets me and thinking about the possibility I’ve heard about some palistinians having Jewish roots

01:33:04
The more I hear about this group and the vast amount of research on this subject , the more humbly I respect those who took this vision to tell the story.

01:33:14
Accuracy is important for talking about music in Sephardic and Crypto-Jewish history and tradition too!

01:33:22
I'm loving the conversation among the panelists

01:33:23
Thanks to all presenters for a great session. Please send lists of books shown on the Zoom screen. Dianne Layden

01:34:47
I wonder what our responsibility is to each other as colleagues re: accuracy and how we can foster that environment.

01:38:33

01:43:27

01:45:07
Thank you for the work, your impact in the descendants of Crypto-Jews is enormous, from people who are curious, other wants to research, other wants to actually return to Judaism, etc. all positive impacts.

01:45:12
Thank you to Cindy Seton-Rogers, Seth Ward, Corinne Brown and all the SCJS members and speakers for organizing this exceptional, inspiring conference! Looking forward to the next one.
