Benches of SC are working. The quality and procedural problems remains to be seen yet. Advocates are facing procedural problems on daily basis. In many cases advocates are getting beneifits and in some cases both victims and advocates are facing difficulties.

BLAST Covid Response_Advocacy Highlights.pdf
Sara Hossain
01:37:07
@win nandar htut khaung - we have seen arrested persons not being produced before a magistrate physically after arrest - for example in a very serious recent case, 81 migrant workers, who returned from vietnam were taken to quarantine on return then imprisoned on allegations of ‘hurting the image of the nation’ (for allegedly protesting outside the bangladesh embassy in vietnam regarding their situation post covid) - lawyers reportedly could not meet them before they were sent to prison - and many already extremely vulnerable now remain incarcerated . other prisoners, such as the journalist kajol have been in jail w/o bail for over six months - with no justification
Win Nandar
01:37:50
Thanks for your sharing! In Myanmar We didn't meet with our clients. So, We're submitted to the prison and the supreme court.
Sara Hossain
01:39:40
win nandar : in bangladesh unfortunately we also have a practice - with honorable exceptions! - of lawyers not meeting their clients. the paralegal programme by govt has made a difference at least for indigent clients, who could - in precovid times - have access to paralegals and this innovation - together with online communication should continue

Sara Hossain
01:50:39
for those who haven’t met - Adv. ZI Khan (known to us in Bangladesh as ‘Panna Bhai’) is an elected member of the Bangladesh Bar Council - we have not talked about how Bar Associations have responded during covid - it would be great to learn more about this . from BLAST we are managed by district Bar Association leaders - so see these partnerships as critical to our response
Win Nandar
01:51:29
Yes, we're able to communicate online with our clients. Then, Does judges accept the submission of power-of-attorney and bail during remand period?During this COVID situation, are the detainees given bail?
Imtiaz Rahman Sabuj
01:55:49
The Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (BSCBA) was instrumental in the reopening of the physical courts in the Supreme Court in August. The BSCBA had to request the Chief Justice of Bangladesh to do take the initiative because many lawyers were finding it difficult to continue their practice owing to techonolgical limitations in virtual courts.
