I have a question about “the talk.”
For the key is educating people. We must get them to see that racism, prejudice, extreme bias is real. It does happen to people that they know and care about. If they can see that is unfair then maybe they can see why they may need to speak up for someone else when they see this behavior.
So what about the 40% of Americans who have zero contact with people who are brown or Black. How can we get them to care?
Today I listened to an NPR talk with Baratund Thurston about his favorite TedTalks and his own about how to citizen and I found fit hard to hear and beautiful.
How much harder are these conversations in a world dominated by social media and in which people have fundamental disagreements about "facts"?
The question why is useful here. Sometimes asking why is a way to move the conversation to something more productive. (Or this is my experience)
Excellent conversation. I actually have to get on a call with a Brown Diversity and Inclusion Committee meeting. Glad to see all of you. Be safe and happy holidays.
so sorry I need to leave this discussion - but I appreciate these insights and hope I can follow up with some of you on the DEI work we are launching at my office. thank you for the candid conversations.
