The key difference is the ability to earn an Associate’s Degree and college credit for the courses you are taking.

Regarding medical school, the opportunity to complete some of the transfer courses (English, math, etc.) as well as get direct patient care hours and certifications that will allow them to work in a healthcare environment will be the benefit for you.

Any of the tracks will provide your students with good foundational knowledge to pursue a career in medicine.

are there any required courses for HSA?

Yes. Students will follow a prescribed list of courses based on the track they select.

Is HSA affiliated with the college board?

The programs available will be different between the HSA and non-HSA options. For example, the HSA has Medical Assisting but the non-HSA has Pharmacy Technician.

The HSA is not directly affiliated with the College Board.

Will any of this benefit my child if she wants to become a surgeon?

Can the HSA student take athletics as 7th period football like regular William students ?

Yes, any foundational education in healthcare will be beneficial to students seeking a career in surgery. We have a program in 12th grade called Central Sterile Processing that could be a great option for your student.

Ayesha - yes, the HSA classes are in the morning.

Krishna - yes, they can, but you may consider having them take the dual credit courses instead since they are guaranteed college credit and are paid for by PISD if your student is enrolled in the HSA.

@Adnan It's just an option for them to take. The HSA pathways are the health science courses. Academic college credit for math, science, or English is just an option. They won't be required to do academic dual credit as HSA.

Yes, you can still do sports as long as they do not conflict with your HSA course.

The health science classes are considered as workforce credit. So those won't transfer traditionally. They are meant to be used to complete certificates or an Associate of Applied Science. Any academic credits (English, math, etc.) could be transferable.

It just depends if it's an out of state or private school.

@Dolores I think this is a great foundation for anyone going into a health science field. Aside from the curriculum, you learn how to work with others and patients through clinicals. This may be what you're looking for even if you're not exactly looking to be a physician.

yeah

I do not believe so, no. However, they can take Dual Credit courses on their own concurrently.

Students can only take 7 classes per day

You can take eschool for PE during the school year. That would be after school.

Krishna - the clinical experience is only during one semester out of the 4 years.

@Huda Yes, your student won't be locked in to anything by doing these courses. They can go on to do whatever they want. Their college transcript will follow them though, so they want to be sure to do their best.

Krishna - depending on the program, the clinical hours can vary from 48 hours up to 400 hours.
