With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, political polarization, economic upheaval, and other global 21st century challenges, how can we continue to strive for harmonious coexistence? Join a discussion with 2018 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Tasuku Honjo, Deputy Director-General, at Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study and Director of the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunobiology (CCII) at Kyoto University, and with Minister Kenichiro Mukai, Head of Chancery, Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC and Chairman of the DC area Kyodai-kai as they share stories about their day-to-day work, accomplishments, and aspirations in pursuit of a more harmonious future. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Yoshiko Akamatsu, Senior Principal Research Scientist in Silicon Valley at AbbVie Inc, a pharmaceutical company, President of the Japan Bio Community, and Kyoto University alumna.

He established the basic conceptual framework of class switch recombination. He discovered PD-1, a negative coreceptor at the effector phase of immune response and showed that PD-1 modulation contributes to treatments of tumor, viral infection and autoimmunity. Dr. Honjo has received many awards, including the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, JMA supreme award of merit, Imperial Prize, Japan Academy Prize, Robert Koch Prize, Order of Culture, the Tang Prize, the Kyoto Prize. Elected as a foreign associate of National Academy of Sciences, USA, as a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists, and also as a member of Japan Academy. Minister Kenichiro Mukai (在米国日本大使館公使; Minister, Head of Chancery, Embassy of Japan in the United States of America @ワシントンDC京大会の会長を務める; Chairperson of Washington DC Kyodai alumni association Jan. 2019-present) 現職は,在米国日本大使館公使。総務担当の公使として,日米間の要人往来,大使公邸での年間行事,全米各州の知事や日系米国人との関係強化等に尽力。アラビア語を話す外交官として,これまで在エジプト日本大使館次席公使,中東第一課長,中東第二課長,在イラク日本大使館公使参事官,国際連合日本政府代表部参事官,日米安全保障条約課首席事務官などを歴任。京都大学法学部卒業。米国ミシガン大学留学。2019年1月からワシントンDC京大会の会長を務める.Serving in his current role since August 2018, Mr. Mukai oversees general affairs, including VIP visits between Japan and the United States, annual events at the Ambassador’s residence, and strengthening relations with states, governors and Japanese American communities. An Arabic-speaking diplomat, he has held positions that include; Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in Egypt; Director of the First and Second Middle East Divisions at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Minister-Counsellor, Embassy of Japan in Iraq; Counsellor, Japan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations; and Principal Deputy Director of Japan US Security Treaty Division. He holds a B.A. in Law from Kyoto University and studied at University of Michigan. Dr. Yoshiko Akamatsu (アッヴィ 上席主任研究員; Senior Principal Research Scientist, AbbVie Inc. Japan Bio Community 代表; President, Japan Bio Community @京都大学卒業生; Kyoto University alumna) 京都大学で学位取得後(生物物理学)、Harvard Medical School (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical CenterとMGH) でのポスドクを経て、徳島大学に赴任、抗体とT細胞受容体の多様性形成機構に関する研究に従事。その後サンフランシスコベイエリアのPDL BioPhamaに入社、Facet Biotech、Abbottを経て現在はバイオ医薬企業であるAbbVieにて抗体医薬の研究開発に携わっている。また、2017年よりJapan Bio Community代表として、西海岸を中心としたライフサイエンス/バイオテック業界をつなぐネットワークイベントを主催. Dr. Yoshiko Akamatsu is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at AbbVie Inc. where she develops antibody therapeutics. Since 2017, she is also a president of Japan Bio Community to connect people who works or interested in Biotech/Life science mainly in San Francisco bay area. Prior to joining PDL BioPharma, a biotech which eventually became AbbVie, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Tokushima where she conducted research to understand the mechanisms associated with antibody/T cell receptor repertoire. She completed her post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School (Beth-Israel Deaconess Hospital and MGH) after obtaining her Ph.D. in Biophysics at Kyoto University.
