Topic
Climate change – a multi-disciplinary challenge
Description
The ongoing effect of climate change represents one of the greatest natural and societal challenge facing humanity. E3 is a flagship development at Trinity College Dublin that brings together engineers, natural scientists, computer scientists and statisticians to develop new educational and research capacity in Engineering, the Environment and Emerging Technologies. Through E3, Trinity is undertaking research in this critical field which includes the study of past, present and likely future patterns of climate change and its ongoing and accelerating detrimental effects on biodiversity, landscapes and infrastructure, as well as research into the societal and economic impacts of climate change.
In this webinar, Trinity’s Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Professor Sylvia Draper, will lead a panel discussion with Professors Laurence Gill (Environmental Engineering) and Jennifer Mc Elwain (Chair of Botany) on how Trinity’s research and educational programmes are informing our understanding of the drivers and impacts of climate change. They will look at the solutions emerging from Trinity’s research that are guiding government policy on mitigating the effects of climate change.
If the event is fully booked, you can join the live stream at our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TCDAlumni.
If you are unable to attend, we will be recording the webinar and will make it available afterwards.

Hi there, You are invited to a Zoom webinar. When: Feb 24, 2021 01:00 PM Dublin Topic: Climate change – a multi-disciplinary challenge Register in advance for this webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ASsg9xDSRW2QtLrH9V7o4A After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. ---------- Webinar Speakers Professor Sylvia Draper (Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics @Trinity College Dublin) Prof. Sylvia Draper is the Professor of Molecular Materials in the School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Her personal research focuses on developing new routes to functional materials for applications in opto-electronics. She was awarded the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland's prestigious David Brown award in 2018 for her role in furthering Inorganic and Coordination Chemistry research. In 2019 she became Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at TCD. A lifelong advocate for diversity in education and scientific research, Sylvia is the academic sponsor of the E3 Initiative. This multi-million project in Engineering, Environment and Emerging Technologies, is among the first internationally to integrate engineering, technology and scientific expertise specifically to address the grand challenges facing our world and to catalyse the urgently needed ‘balanced solutions’. Professor Jennifer Mc Elwain (Head of Botany @Trinity College Dublin) Prof. Jennifer McElwain holds the 1711 Chair of Botany at Trinity College Dublin's School of Natural Sciences. She is currently the Head of Botany within the School and Director of Trinity Botanic Gardens. Her research and teaching focus on the evolution of plants, climates and atmospheric composition over hundreds of millions of years using fossils, chemical (isotope) signatures and botanical archives (herbaria). She is Chair of the Royal Irish Academy Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Science. Her research has been funded by SFI, EPA, IRC, NSF, ERC, Marie Curie and National Geographic. She is an elected member of the Royal Irish Academy and was awarded for Excellence in EU research by the President of Ireland in 2012. Professor Laurence Gill (Professor in Environmental Engineering @School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin) Laurence Gill is a Professor in Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin. His research interests involve studying the fate and transport of both air and water-borne pollutants in the natural and built environment, the development of passive treatment processes, the ecohydrology and greenhouse emissions of wetlands and the characterisation of karst hydrological catchments. Much of the work involves extensive field studies which are then used to develop mathematical models to gain further insight into the processes. He is one of 8 Principal Investigators who lead the country’s first Applied Geoscience research centre (iCRAG) and heads the Groundwater research spoke which focuses on karst hydrology. Prior to joining at Trinity College in 1999, he spent several years working in the UK water industry on the design of water and wastewater treatment processes for urban populations.
