IPlytics | How To Navigate Risk Webinar Series Part 3 [Asia]: The Role of Standard Essential Patents for Smart Energy applications
Smart energy refers to the entire value chain from energy generation to energy consumption. The energy sector faces many challenges, many of which can be solved with new standards-enabled connected services and applications. A wave of incoming smart energy technologies could make the world’s electricity infrastructure more efficient. However, it relies on standardized technology such as 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi, which are subject to thousands of standard essential patents (SEPs). This has wide-reaching implications for the energy industry implementing these standards as well as for the standards developers and owners of relevant patents and SEPs. Yet many companies in the energy sector have no access to SEPs, which creates legal risks and uncertainty as connectivity standards are fully implemented in existing smart energy systems. Moreover, many of the energy sector that adopt standards subject to SEPs, have little expertise in negotiating SEP licenses.

Understanding the overall SEP landscape is critical for the smooth connectivity standard adoption, maintaining profitability, and protecting the capacity to sell new products, components or systems with enough access to third-party patent rights.

In this webinar, we will discuss the role of SEPs for connectivity technologies for the smart energy applications, provide an overview of the landscape of declared SEPs and pooled SEPs as well as discuss standards development initiatives that are relevant or will become relevant for the energy sector.
