Join Kate McMahon, a Partner in Conn Maciel Carey’s national OSHA Practice, and special guest Dr. John Howard, the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), for a one-on-one Q&A event regarding COVID-19 in the workplace.
Cases continue to spike throughout the United States, while employers try to keep pace with ever-shifting guidance from the CDC, OSHA, and state and county health departments, and face several new COVID-19 emergency regulations around the country. NIOSH works closely with the CDC to develop its COVID-19 guidance and to help educate Industry on effective infection control and response strategies. NIOSH also provides support to the White House Coronavirus Taskforce and assists states and local health departments develop effect strategies and policy to address COVID-19 in the workplace.
Through this Q&A session, Dr. John Howard, the Director of NIOSH for 17 years and counting, provides detailed insight and advice on the workplace safety and health implications of COVID-19 and what employers can expect next and how they can protect their workers from this pandemic. He first served as NIOSH director from 2002 - 2008, and again from 2009 - present. In 2015, Dr. Howard was re-appointed to an unprecedented 3rd six-year term. Prior to his appointment as Director of NIOSH, Dr. Howard served as Division Chief at Cal/OSHA from 1991 through 2002. Dr. Howard received his Doctor of Medicine from Loyola Univ. of Chicago, his Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health, his Doctor of Law from the UCLA, and his Master of Law in Administrative Law and his Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management from George Washington Univ. Dr. Howard is board-certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. He is admitted to the practice of medicine and law in California and DC, and he is a member U.S. Supreme Court bar. Kathryn M. McMahon (Partner, OSHA Practice, Conn Maciel Carey LLP ) Kathryn M. McMahon is a partner in the national OSHA • Workplace Safety Practice Group of Conn Maciel Carey LLP. She focuses her practice in the areas of occupational safety and health (OSHA) law and environmental law. Ms. McMahon helps clients manage incident and fatality inspections, and litigation related to alleged violations by federal OSHA and state OSHA programs. She also represents industry stakeholders in all aspects of OSHA rulemaking, including proposed rules regarding silica, injury and illness recordkeeping, hexavalent chromium, and beryllium, among others.
