Headache Masterclass: Latest Approaches & Interventional Techniques
Precision Health invites General Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals to attend this live, online and interactive meeting presented by Dr Hazem Akil, Dr Symon McCallum and Mr Adam Boyt and facilitated by Professor Richard Bittar.

This seminar aims to analyse the common and more severe causes of headaches, with a discussion of the multitude of specific headache types. The vast majority are benign, self limiting and do not require neurosurgical assessment. With the management and treatment of resistant headaches being complex, we will also aim to cover the important types of common and uncommon headaches and their prophylaxis, outlining a range of cutting- edge and gold standard treatment options available. We will also aim explore in more detail the more novel and advanced interventional treatments; botulinum toxin type A and neuromodulation. We aim to enable the attendees to become more educated on the types of headaches and available interventions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Outline the key aspects of early headache management, including the use of imaging modalities.
2. Identify the causes of headaches.
3. Discuss the range of treatment options for headache including surgical options such as occipital nerve and spinal cord stimulation.

Dr Hazem Akil (MD, FRACS)
Neurosurgeon & Spinal Surgeon @Precision Brain, Spine & Pain Centre
Dr Hazem Akil is an Australian trained neurosurgeon with unique global experience. He underwent his post graduate surgical training in the UK (Edinburgh, London) and was granted a full membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004.Following this, Dr Akil moved to Australia to further pursue his surgical sub-specialty career where he enrolled in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons neurosurgical training program. During many years of training Dr Akil gained valuable experience in major neurosurgical units in both Sydney and Melbourne and was awarded a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons neurosurgical fellowship.Dr Akil has gone on to obtain further intensive training in complex spine surgery as part of the prestigious AOSpine fellowship under the guidance of Dr Geoffrey Askin in Brisbane, Queensland.
Dr Symon McCallum
Pain Specialist & Anesthetist @Precision Brain, Spine & Pain Centre
Dr Symon McCallum, is a highly qualified pain specialist and anaesthetist with expertise in the medical and interventional treatment of persistent pain. After training in anaesthetics, he specialised further, receiving a Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine. Dr McCallum prides himself on an excellent bedside manner, thorough clinical approach, high level of technical expertise, and strong communication with referring practitioners. Mr Adam Boyt (MBBS, BSc (Hons), PhD, FRACS)
Bariatric & General Surgeon @Precision Integrated Medical Services
Adam Boyt is a specialist in bariatric and general surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive/laparoscopic techniques. He also performs a wide range of general surgery including complex hernia repairs.Following the completion of a science degree (UWA Hons) in biochemistry and neurophysiology, he completed his PhD in molecular neurobiology concurrently with his medical training at the University of Melbourne. He then undertook general surgery training before completing his Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at St John of God, Mt Lawley.Since completion of his fellowship he worked as a bariatric and general surgeon in Perth, prior to moving back to Victoria. As well has his urban General and Bariatric experience, he has several years of extensive rural and remote general and trauma surgery experience in 4 states including places as varied as Broome, Broken Hill, Echuca, Derby, Mt Isa and Cairns. He maintains a keen interest in research and teaching and is married with three children.
