7.00 - 8.30pm, Thursdays 15, 22 & 29 July 2021
Tune in and draw along in these virtual workshops with artist Dr Bill Platz. Discover tips for approaching drawing and take inspiration from artworks in ‘European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York’. You’ll be virtually transported to Bill’s studio and invited to draw from live costumed models.
Session 1 | Thu 15 Jul | Laying in Wet Ground
The dead don’t draw, but they inhabit the life drawing studio! Explore the deep connections between mortality and life drawing, experiment with dramatic perspective and foreshortening, and learn a historical technique for creating a unique surface for your drawing.
Session 2 | Thu 22 Jul | Laying in Dry Ground
The life studio can be a dry, dusty place with chalky plaster casts and anatomical models lurking in cabinets and corners. Learn a bygone technique for preparing your paper surface and experiment with variations of tone, light and shadow to breathe life into your drawings.
Session 3 | Thu 29 Jul | The Dark Manner
Two defining features of the life drawing studio are its darkness and stillness. Taking inspiration from the dramatic intensity of dark and light in Baroque paintings, explore techniques for amplifying darkness in your drawing, as live models emerge from and disappear into the shadows.
Free / Bookings required / Participant’s webcam and microphone will be disabled / The event will be recorded and made available on QAGOMA’s YouTube channel.
