Great Expectations: In search of the Aurora Borealis
“Eсть аврора” (yest avrora – there is the aurora) our driver says, pointing out of the window as we Golden Eagle passengers arrived high on a hill on the outskirts of Murmansk north of the arctic circle on 4 January, in the beauty of the deep, white winter. Golden Eagle has three expeditions north of the Arctic Circle each year to visit the Sami and their reindeer, the snow hotel, go dog sledding on the frozen sea, experience the food, drink, music, architecture, history, culture and vast scenery of Russia, and – with luck – to see the northern lights. This talk, led by Professor Donald Kurtz, looks at the Sun’s wind and weather that can blast the Earth to produce power failures, destroy satellites, disrupt radio and internet communication and also to generate spectacular aurorae.
