Join IEM and Asfalis for a discussion on the experiences and responsibilities of emergency managers, law enforcement, and private sector leaders during times of civil unrest and protest. Curtis Brown, State Director of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Chief Chris Hsiung, Chief of Police for the Mountain View Police Department in California, and Daniel Alexander, Director of Security Operations for Comcast/NBC Universal-West Division, will be sharing the lessons they have learned as leaders during civil unrest, and how their organizations are developing a sustainable approach to addressing inequality in their diverse communities. The conversation will focus on the role their organizations play during civil unrest and protest and touch on how leaders can work with and listen to the communities they serve.

Asfalis helps organizational leaders to prepare, respond, and recover from disruptions by specializing in crisis management and business resilience. Prior to Asfalis, Vanessa worked with a Tier 1 intelligence agency and fortune 500 organizations, developing business resilience programs and training leaders to effectively respond to crises, equipping her to be on the front lines of the industry to restore community and business resiliency. Vanessa’s engagement with the community has earned her recognition at the local, national and international levels. Mathews was appointed by the Mayor of Charlotte as the Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Charlotte International Cabinet. The Mecklenburg Times recognized Vanessa as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Charlotte, NC. Additionally, Vanessa teaches Business Continuity and Crisis Management in Savannah State University’s HSEM degree program. Bryan Koon (VP for Homeland Security & Emergency Management @IEM) Bryan Koon is the former Director at the Florida Division of Emergency Management and serves as IEM’s Vice President of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Koon has spent his career focused on improving emergency response operations and engaging communities in becoming better prepared for emergencies and disasters. Koon was appointed by Florida Governor Rick Scott in 2011 to be the state’s Director of Emergency Management. Prior to working for Florida, Koon was the Operations Manager and Director of Emergency Management for Wal-Mart. There, he was responsible for emergency management operations for 8,500 facilities and 2.2 million employees worldwide during disasters. Koon worked as a White House contractor with SRA International, building off his work as Training Officer for Presidential Contingency Programs under the U.S. Navy. While on active duty with the Navy, Koon worked at the White House Military Office in the President’s Emergency Operations Center.
