Spine, Shoulder, Foot and Ankle: An Orthopaedic Update

The activity will provide education about red flags for diagnosing symptoms of commonly presenting orthopaedic conditions such as sprained ankle, lower back and neck pain, plus shoulder pain and when to refer for specialist opinion.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply the key principles of diagnosing foot and ankle tendon injuries and will be able to identify and diagnose common ligament injuries.
2. Apply information learned to formulate an individualised management plan for the sprained ankle.
3. Describe red flag symptoms and diagnostic features of hip and spine pathology and how to differentiate between them.
4. Analyse both surgical and non-surgical options for holistic treatment of their patients for both cervical and lumbar spine conditions.
5. Assess, diagnose and formulate treatment plans for patients with a non- traumatic shoulder injury based on their evaluation

Mr Wei-Han Tay
Orthopaedic Surgeon @Knox Private Hospital
Mr Wei-Han Tay is an Australian-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in the treatment of foot and ankle conditions, and Orthopaedic trauma. Wei-Han obtained his undergraduate medical degree at the University of New South Wales in 2005. He commenced his basic surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2007, during which he was also an anatomy demonstrator at the University of Melbourne and studied a Post Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy. In 2008, he devoted a year to full time clinical research as part of his Master of Surgery under the University of Melbourne. Wei-Han completed his advanced surgical training in Orthopaedic surgery in New South Wales, and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and as a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) in 2016. He subsequently spent another 12 months undertaking AOA-accredited fellowships to gain further expertise and experience in his chosen subspecialties.
Mr Keat Ooi
Orthopaedic Surgeon @Knox Private Hospital
Mr Keat Ooi is an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in spine and joint replacement surgery. Keat believes in providing the highest quality of care for his patients, recognizing that every patient has their own individual needs that require personalised care. Keat received his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 2005. He furthered his orthopaedic surgical training at the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Victoria and Tasmania and was awarded his fellowship in 2017 by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His special interest is in treating spine conditions which culminated in his completion of the AOA Clinical and Research Fellowship in Spinal Surgery at Austin Health and Combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spinal Fellowship at Macquarie University Hospital, New South Wales. Keat’s treatment philosophy for adult spinal deformity and degenerative disorders encompasses multiple regions including the Spine, hips and knees.
Mr Kemble Wang
Orthopaedic Surgeon @Knox Private Hospital
Mr Kemble Wang is an Australian and USA-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Adult, Adolescent and Paediatric Shoulder/Elbow/Wrist reconstruction. After completing his medical degree at the University of Melbourne, Mr. Kemble Wang underwent orthopaedic training in the Victorian program of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He then undertook sub-specialty fellowship training in upper extremity surgery in Melbourne. This was followed by a 12-month prestigious clinical fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard University, USA, specializing in upper limb reconstruction in young patients. He also completed fellowships in neuromuscular orthopaedics in Minnesota, USA, and spent time with leading upper limb surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York.
