7/21/2020 - LVBCH Webinar with David Quammen "COVID-19 and the Next Pandemic - Are We Ready?"
You are invited to join an LVBCH sponsored webinar featuring David Quammen, author of New York Times Bestseller "Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic" and his presentation "THIS IS IT, THIS IS NOT IT: Pandemic Preparedness Before and After COVID-19"

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
The single most important lesson that people can draw from the pandemic (and this presentation) is the COVID-19 is not an independent event, a misfortune that has simply befallen humanity. It is part of a pattern of spillovers, outbreaks, and epidemics, leading up to this moment and beyond it; and that pattern directly reflects things that we humans are doing, choices we are making, and consequences we are drawing onto ourselves.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
The COVID-19 pandemic is a devastating event that was heartbreakingly predictable. It was predicted to Quammen ten years ago while researching "Spillover". Those predictions, solicited from a select group of infectious-disease experts. went like this: Yes, there will be a NEXT BIG ONE, a severe pandemic of some newly emerging infectious disease. The agent will be a virus that will emerge from a wild animal, very likely a primate or a bat. The virus will be one with a high mutation rate and high evolvability - such as an influenza or a coronavirus. Where will it spill over into humans? In some situation where humans come into close, disruptive conflict with wildlife, perhaps a "wet market" in a place such as China. What was surprising, was how catastrophically unprepared to deal with such a pandemic many government and national healthcare systems were.
This presentation will discuss how and why this pandemic escaped beyond the bounds of containment to punish the whole world, as well as the question Quammen is asked most often "Is this the Next Big One?"
