How the Refrigerant Transition Journey Impacts You
HVACR and industry stakeholders need to know about the transition to low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants and how it affects them. As some states are already employing the new refrigerants, it is critical to know the different types, safety classifications, and how they will be incorporated into equipment standards and building codes such as the International Mechanical Code and Uniform Mechanical Code. This introductory session will explain how the transition impacts industry stakeholders regardless of their role.

Learning Objectives
• Purpose of the change to lower-GWP refrigerants
• Timeline for the transition to lower-GWP refrigerants
• The ASHRAE flammability classification system
• The similarities and differences between lower-GWP refrigerants and current higher-GWP refrigerants, such as R-410A
• Testing and research completed to support using the lower-GWP refrigerants, which are generally class 2L flammable
• The changes incorporated into equipment standard UL 60335-2-40 and ASHRAE 15
• The changes proposed and passed to the model building codes that support use of the newer, lower-GWP refrigerants
