Virtual Lunch and Learn: A Micro(be) View of Prairie Restoration
Historically native grasslands occurred in almost every county of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Today less than 2% of Michigan’s native grasslands remain, and decades of agricultural tilling and fertilizing have resulted in major changes in the soil community. Join Dr. Kathryn Docherty, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University, as she discusses how soil microbial communities and nutrient cycles are impacted by agricultural activities and strategies land managers can use to improve restoration efforts in newly installed prairies and conservation corridors in Michigan.
