Crafting a Violin with Nathan Abbe
Violin makers tend to be very precise and deliberate, often achieving a level of accuracy to within a fraction of a millimeter, and their temperament while selecting tonewood is very much the same. Learn how the shape and materials of a violin affect its sound and resonance, the difference between handcrafted and factory made. Nathan will be discussing the qualities that have allowed traditional violin tonewoods to be the materials of choice for centuries. He will talk about how growing conditions affect physical properties of the wood, how the physical properties of the wood affect sound, and how the individual pieces of the violin work together to produce music that can be as soft as a pillow or as loud as a lion's roar… and of course, it should also look nice.
