Boat Wake and Propeller Wash Impacts on Minnesota Lakes
Impacts from wakes have long been a concern for lake users. Wakes too close to shore and in shallow waters can create safety hazards, cause shoreline erosion, damage docks, degrade water quality, and jeopardize loon nests. This talk will give an overview of preliminary results from the first year of a three-year, crowd-funded study in Minnesota that seeks to characterize boat-generated waves from large recreational watercraft common to Minnesota including wake surfing boats. This research effort has focused on lake shore environments typical of Minnesota, but the results will be germaine to anyone looking to gather more information about the long-term impacts of larger wakes on lakes and ponds.

Jeff Marr

Jeff Marr is the Associate Director of Engineering and Facilities at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Jeff manages SAFL’s Applied Research and Engineering Team, which has ongoing work for public and private organizations in the fields of urban stormwater, hydraulic modeling, wind and water power, river engineering and restoration, and technology development for field monitoring. Marr is a licensed civil engineer specializing in open channel hydraulics and sediment transport. His research interests include water hydraulics, river engineering and restoration, sediment transport dynamics, and wind engineering. Jeff Marr is also an affiliated researcher with the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies and the associate director of the Eolos Wind Energy Research Consortium.
