Raising The Grade for Breastfeeding Access in CA Schools: A Primer on the Rights of Pregnant and Parenting Students & Employees

Description

Federal and state law requires equal treatment, including adequate accommodations, for all pregnant and parenting students and employees in California, yet those who are pregnant and parenting are often discriminated against and unable to obtain the same education as their non-pregnant and parenting counterparts. Too often a school's policies do not reflect the rights and protections required under the law. In 2020, following the success of our Los Angeles County Breastfeeding Report Card, CWLC took on the task of reviewing and improving the policies for pregnant and parenting students and employees at every K-12 school district in the state. This webinar will outline these important laws, review the results of our work, and discuss challenges we faced and solutions we have identified.

Prior to joining CWLC, Amy was a litigation associate at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Los Angeles, where she represented a wide array of clients in large-scale commercial disputes through all stages of litigation. While at Akin Gump, Amy also worked on a multitude of pro bono matters, including representation of domestic violence victims and LGBTQ clients in petitions for asylum before the immigration court. Before joining Akin Gump, Amy spent a year as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Justice Warren E. Jones of the Idaho Supreme Court in Boise, Idaho. Amy earned her juris doctor magna cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law and received her Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, magna cum laude, from UCLA. Taylor Gumm (Legal Fellow @California Women’s Law Center) Taylor engages in research, writing, and other legal support in all areas of CWLC’s work. While attending UCLA Law School, Taylor externed with Public Counsel’s Children Rights Project working to assist families in completing their adoption proceedings. Taylor also served as a research assistant for several UCLA Law school professors, focusing on criminal justice reform. Taylor received her juris doctor from UCLA School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
