Eavesdrop on Atlanta Master Chorale Artistic Director Eric Nelson and Mark Lawson, President of ECS Publishing Group/MorningStar Music as they discuss the intricacies of choral music composition and publishing. The conversation will include Lawson’s insights on what publishers look for when deciding whether to publish a piece of music as well as advice for young composers.
Mark W. Lawson became the owner and president of MorningStar Music Publishers in 1997, and in 2015, he became the owner and president of ECS Publishing Group, parent company for E.C. Schirmer, Galaxy Music Corporation and MorningStar Music Publishers (publisher of Atlanta Master Chorale’s Choral Series).
At ECS Publishing Group, Lawson is responsible for the publication development, strategic focus, and management. As a publisher, he enjoys working with both new as well as established composers. ECS controls the rights to more than 20,000 copyrights and publishes music and books for schools, churches, professional ensembles, and opera companies. Lawson has been active in developing digital delivery methods, strategizing about the development of music web-sites, and has been involved in numerous recording projects. Lawson has developed publishing strategies for Washington National Cathedral, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, the Presbyterian Association of Church Musicians, Baylor University, the National Lutheran Choir, and Duke University Choir. ECS also has been a consultant on two U.S. Papal visits.
Lawson is actively involved in the National Music Publishers Association, the Church Music Publishers Association, and serves on the board of directors of Chorus America.
