3 Works: Eddy Firmin on Decolonization

Join us for this free online series hosted by Chief Curator Sequoia Miller in which an artist shares three of their artworks and speaks about them in connection to a larger theme.

This week, our presenter is Eddy Firmin. Born and raised in the French Caribbean (Guadeloupe), Firmin is an artist, researcher, and speaker who currently lives and works in Montréal.
His artwork questions the transcultural logics of his identity and the power imbalances at play. On a theoretical level, he works on a "Méthode Bossale," a proposal for the decolonization of the imaginary in art.

He holds a PhD in Arts Studies and Practices from the Université du Québec à Montréal, and a master's degree from l’École Supérieure d’Art et Design le Havre-Rouen (France). He coordinates the publication of the decolonial magazine Minorit'Art. His visual artwork questions the transcultural logics of his identity and the power imbalances at play. On a theoretical level, he works on a "Méthode Bossale", a proposal for the decolonization of the imaginary in art. Sequoia Miller (Chief Curator, Gardiner Museum ) Sequoia Miller is a historian, curator, and studio potter. He is the Chief Curator at the Gardiner Museum. Miller holds a BA in Russian and Art History from Brandeis University; an MA from the Bard Graduate Center for Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture; and a PhD in the History of Art from Yale University. His curatorial projects include The Ceramic Presence in Modern Art at the Yale University Art Gallery and Ai Weiwei: Unbroken at the Gardiner. Before re-entering academia, Miller was a full-time studio potter for over ten years based in the Pacific Northwest.
