Learn how to flex this superpower: mobilizing your learning community (even the naysayers) as active participants and contributors toward advancing learning and innovation.
Hear from Devin Vodicka and Marlon Styles, both learner-centered leaders and former Superintendents, who have mobilized communities toward transformational change that resulted in improvements in areas ranging from culture and connectedness to academics to behavior.
They’ll share strategic and practical advice on:
- Forming an effective guiding coalition
- Elevating, prioritizing, and getting student input
- Gathering input and gaining buy-in from educators
- Engaging parents, businesses, and local community to inform and support district goals
Devin and Marlon will discuss approaches and share tools and examples to superpower school and district leaders advancing communities toward more learner-centered models of education.

Over the past 20 years, Devin’s vision for how to drive high-quality student outcomes enabled him to quickly ascend to the roles of educator, school principal, district administrator, and superintendent. During his tenure serving Vista Unified’s more than 25,000 students, Devin was recognized as California Superintendent of the year in 2016 (AASA), 2015 (ACSA), 2015 (Pepperdine University). In 2014, he received Classroom of the Future Foundation’s “Innovative Superintendent of the Year” award. After joining Vista in 2012, he was invited to the White House nine times, both in recognition of district-wide achievements and to partner on national efforts with the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Technology and the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools. He is the author of Learner-Centered Leadership.

As an educational leader for seventeen years, Marlon's mission is to inspire educators to see themselves as empowered unifiers capable of creating the types of learning experiences today’s modern learners need to thrive. He started his career as a Middle School Mathematics teacher and went on to serve as Superintendent of Middletown City Schools. Under his leadership the district was awarded the International Society for Technology in Education Distinguished District Award in 2019. He testified before the United States Congress in 2020 to advocate for access and opportunity for all students. K-12 Dive recognized him as the Superintendent of the Year in 2020 for his advocacy and leadership to close equity gaps on a national stage. Marlon has had the honor to inspire educators across the country through presentations at conferences. He is a unifier in education who works to create cultures in which people win.
