Higher Education, Gender and Equity: Making SDG 5 part of universities’ strategy and activities

This year’s International Women’s Day 2023 (8 March) is taking place under the theme #EmbraceEquity: “Equality is the goal, and equity is the means to get there. Through the process of equity, we can reach equality.” One day before IWD, IAU and EWORA are inviting interested participants and experts from higher education to discuss how universities can be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive across their activities, and in particular when working with local communities. Amongst the speakers, we will give the floor to university leadership and other representatives of IAU and EWORA Member universities, presenting examples of good practices, and institutional and organisational perspectives.

IAU celebrated it’s 70th Anniversary from 9 December 2020 to 9 December 2021. For the past two decades, she has fostered the key role of higher education in societal transformation. She supervises the overall programme activities of the IAU, develops the Association’s strategic plans and oversees the everyday work of the secretariat. She positioned the IAU as partner in UNESCO work on Education for sustainable development and in the UNESCO Futures of Education initiative, and higher education as a key stakeholder for the UN Agenda 2030 – Transforming our world. Hilligje van’t Land strongly believes in the importance of international cooperation and intercultural understanding and has developed multilateral projects related higher education and beyond. Gülsün Sağlamer (President @EWORA) Prof.Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer, Former Rector of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) (1996-2004) is a professor of architecture and has been as a post-doc researcher in Cambridge University (1975-1976), visiting Prof.in Queen’s University of Belfast in 1993-1996. She was a Board Member of European University Association (2005-2009) and the Chair of the Advisory group of MSCA (2013-2016). She has received several architectural prizes and was awarded Honoris Causa by Carleton University, Canada (2001), Universitatea de Nord Din Baia Mare University, Romania (2002), Ovidius University of Constantza in Romania (2009) and Queens University of Belfast (2018). American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded her “Honorary Fellowship (Hon FAIA) in 2006 and she has been also awarded “Leonardo da Vinci Medal” by SEFI (Société Européenne Pour la Formation Ingénieurs-European Society for Engineering Education) in 2005-2006. She is a member of European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters since 2011. Jouhaina Gherib (President @University of Manouba) Jouhaina Gherib is a professor of Strategic Management at the University of Manouba in Tunisia. She holds a PhD from the university of Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne in France and has published over 30 scientific publications and conference papers. Her research interests include strategic decision making, corporate social responsibility, entrepreneurial orientation and sustainable development goals (SDG). She was elected as Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations in 2011, then, in 2014. She was later elected as the sixth Rector of the University of Manouba in 2017 and re-elected again in 2020 becoming the first women in Tunisia to do so. As Rector, Jouhaina Gherib devotes her efforts to making scientific research results of the university more visible and to align the quality of education with international standards and making so with a constant interest towards the well-being of the entire community. Vianne Timmons (President and vice-chancellor @Memorial University) Dr. Vianne Timmons, OC, took office as the 13th president and vice-chancellor of Memorial in April 2020, coming from the University of Regina where she had served as president since 2008. During her tenure there, the university attained its highest-ever enrolment and diversity, greater recognition for faculty work, and increased levels of external research funding. Alexandra Seybal (GSF Steering Committee Member @Global Student Forum) Alexandra Seybal is a member of the Global Student Forum Steering Committee representing the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions. She has been an elected Board Member of OBESSU and held multiple leadership positions in the student movement at the local and national level. As a student activist she believes that education can be a key change-maker and that a qualitative, inclusive education system, where everyone has access to schools, can make the world a better place.
